Here’s a shining example of a place to stay that benefits the local human and wildlife population.
Moela Safari Lodge was built by the local Khumaga community with the environment front of mind. Only local materials were used in its construction, and it’s all solar powered. The result is a beautiful lodge that tips a nod to African architectural traditions and designs, without forgetting the needs of contemporary guests.
It’s built into a secluded section of bank in the Boteti River Valley on a private tribal reserve next to the Makgadikgadi National Park. From up here, you get an elevated view of the world around and below you. And what a world.
Teeming with wildlife virtually all year round, the area is famed for its migrating zebra and wildebeest. Thousands of them gather in the valley and put on a migration show that’s worth the price of admission on its own.
And the waterhole in the base of the valley is a magnet for all sorts of wildlife including herds of elephant, plus hippo, meerkat and giraffe. Photo opportunities aplenty, and in the rainy season when you throw predators such as lion and cheetah into the mix, things get really interesting.
Ensuring you get the best views of the wildlife outside was certainly front and centre when the locals designed the accommodation. All 8 of the thatched twin or double suites (2 of which are ideal for a family) favour a minimalist approach design-wise without ever sacrificing comfort.
As well as the bedroom, there’s a living area and ensuite bathroom. You’ll also have a private viewing deck and the option to sleep out in the pans for an unforgettable night out under the stars.
For times when you’re away from your accommodation, there’s a swimming pool with daybeds arranged around it. There are also two viewing decks named Nest and Riverbed respectively, the former offering a more aerial angle of the surroundings than the latter which is at ground level.
You’ve a choice of game reserves and national parks to explore, with Nxai Pan, Makgadikgadi, and Central Kalahari all close by. Day and night excursions are available, by car and on foot. And depending on the time of year you’re here, you can go on a boat cruise along the Boteti straight from the lodge. All organised trips will be led by a knowledgeable local San Bushman guide and tracker who’ll share the importance of their spiritual connection to the land they call home.
After days out, you can return to the open plan dining room for your meals (or eat in your accommodation if you prefer), followed by a drink in the bar, and then relaxation in the library or on one of the viewing decks.
