If you believe in the importance of location, location, location, this new tented camp in northern Okavango Delta delivers in abundance. Lush lagoons, wide open grasslands and floodplains provide the backdrop to a camp that opened to guests as recently as April 2025.
You’ll soon see why the camp’s creators, led by Ralph Bousfeld and the same team that runs the popular Jack’s Camp and Duke’s Camp, chose this spot for their newest creation. The views have that wow factor that are required from any safari destination, with the Okavango River spreading out before you.
The area is sheltered by leadwood trees and teeming with wildlife. It’s an unfenced camp, so animals are free to roam, something to bear in mind if you are planning to visit with children (kids over 6 are welcome here). The grazing animals that choose to feed nearby inevitably attract the predators that provide the box office moments most visitors want to see. It all means that game drives from Mbamba are likely to result in chances to view a wide range of land, air and water based animals.
Take your pick from land and water-based things to do all year round. Always popular are the day and night guided wilderness experiences during which you’ll be in the safe hands of some of the best rangers and trackers in the business. They’ll do their best to ensure you see the lion and wild dog that prowl the local area, and will give you the best chance of getting eyes-on more rare species, such as sable antelope, wattled crane and Pel’s fishing owl.
When water levels allow, you can climb aboard a motorboat or a canoe-like mokoro and explore the local area from the surface of the Okavango. Helicopter rides can also be booked for an extra fee that’ll help you create even more memories.
Two lounges give you a choice of places to kick back and relax, perhaps to read a book you’ve selected from the small library. Afternoon tea, breakfast, lunch and evening meals are served at a long table, either in the covered dining area or out in the open.
When you want to relax outdoors, the pool’s the place to cool down, while around the firepit is the place to warm up as the sun sets.
There are 12 canvas tents in camp, each with a four poster bed, ensuite facilities and a private veranda. This is classic safari accommodation at its finest, with mahogany furnishings and Persian rugs. A nod is tipped to 21st Century luxuries in the form of air conditioning and the availability of WiFi.
At Mbamba, guests can experience a variety of safari activities that showcase the rich biodiversity of the Okavango Delta. Enjoy twice-daily game drives, including the option for night drives, in search of iconic species like lions, leopards, elephants and African wild dogs. Water-based adventures include mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and seasonal boating safaris through the Delta’s winding channels. Birdwatchers will be in their element, with over 400 species recorded in the area. For something truly memorable, helicopter flights to the nearby Tsodilo Hills—home to ancient rock art and dramatic landscapes—offer a unique cultural and scenic perspective.
