What’s more, it’s family friendly - good news if you’re wanting a safari experience you can enjoy with the kids. There are 25 places to stay in camp, located in various areas of the forest which gives you the chance to wake each morning to the sound of birdsong – if only us humans knew what they were singing, maybe we could join in the chorus.
All accommodation, including the 15 Standard Suites (each sleeps 2) features a king size bed, and a private patio so you get somewhere you can do a little wildlife spotting while sitting down – surely the best way.
All have big windows to help you make the most of the views which, as you’d expect are dominated by wildlife. There’s air conditioning (well, this is Africa after all), ensuite bathrooms, and drinks and refreshments provided, including a Lavazza coffee machine.
In addition to all that, the 7 villas (each sleeps 2) have a private lap pool and showers inside and out, while the 3 Family Villas (each sleeps 2 adults and 2 children), have a bigger private pool and a connected bedroom with twin beds for younger guests, who get their own ensuite bath, shower and double wash basin – so they can brush their teeth at the same time. Handy.
There are plenty of places you can socialise with others who’ve chosen Southern Camp for their safari experience. The swimming pool is a popular place for guests to gather. Maybe enjoy a splash in the water before a splash of something refreshing in a glass, brought to your poolside lounger by one of the team.
Everyone’s got to eat sometime, so mealtimes give you a great opportunity to see who else is in camp. Dinner in the boma is a popular choice. How often do you get to dine outside to the soundtrack of African wildlife bedding down for the night, while a fire flickers nearby? Of course, there’s no guarantee the night will be clear, but if it is, counting the stars will keep you busy.
If the weather’s not playing ball, or you fancy a change, there’s an inside dining room that’s open on one side, so you can still view the surrounding wildlife while you eat and drink undercover. And you’ll get a tantalising view into the wine cellar.
There are plenty of sofas and armchairs close to cosy fireplaces to choose from when you want to kick back and relax. Why not grab a book from the library and spend a few hours reading?
Watering holes around here aren’t just for the local wildlife. Pick your favourite drink from the bar menu and one of the friendly team will pour it for you.
Not all camps in the reserve offer free wi-fi, but Southern Camp is on the ‘yes, we do’ list, so you can share pics of your accommodation and your safari experiences with jealous friends and family back home, pretty much instantly.
And speaking of safari, the team at Southern Camp arrange drives out into the reserve in open top vehicles. You’ll be accompanied by rangers trained to know where to find the animal, bird and plant life you want to see.
Last, but not least, everyone who stays in a Kapama camp gets access to the spa at the nearby Karula site, with a shuttle car service ready to take you there and back.
Actually, that wasn’t the last but not least bit. This is. If you’re staying at Southern Camp for the romance of it all, you can book a night out under the stars with a 5 course dinner first, which all happens on a raised platform so you can’t be disturbed by the local wildlife.
At Kapama Southern Camp, guests can enjoy an exceptional safari experience in the heart of the Greater Kruger Park. The day begins with an early morning game drive, where you'll have the chance to encounter the Big Five and a variety of other wildlife, followed by a stop for hot drinks and rusks before returning to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, guided bush walks offer an intimate way to explore the landscape up close. The afternoon is free to relax before indulging in a delicious High Tea, followed by an evening game drive where you can observe nocturnal animals and enjoy sundowner drinks at sunset. In addition to thrilling safari activities, guests can unwind at the wellness centre, which offers a range of treatments, or take part in nearby activities like hot air ballooning, a visit to the Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species, or a romantic sleepout under the stars for a truly memorable experience.
