Families are welcome at this fully fenced-in, family-run safari lodge located in the west of the Timbavati Private Game Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park.
There’s room for only 16 guests at any one time, so overcrowding or long wait times to get served your delicious meals and drinks won’t ever be a problem. The only issues you’ll have is deciding what to do next.
The safari lodge is located close to where the Big 5 are known to roam. But they’re not the only stars of nature’s show, as white lion, cheetah, zebra, crocodile, hippo, giraffe, wild dog and many more species call the area home, along with a variety of bird and plant life.
There’s a large, open plan lounge with various places to sit and relax, perhaps after you’ve eaten in the dining area or boma, and grabbed a drink from the bar. All meals and some drinks are included in the price you pay upfront.
Explore the sunken wine cellar, browse the shelves and displays in the curio shop, get a massage or treatment in the spa, enjoy a dip in the pool or some reps in the gym – there’s plenty to keep you busy here. And if you want to see more wildlife, head to the raised birdwatching hide, binoculars in hand.
All ages are welcome on the game drives, with a special children’s Kambaku Kubs programme designed to cater for younger guests that will see them gain prized Junior Ranger status at the end of their stay. The camp team also provides walking safaris, trips into the bush for photographers and even a visit to the Timbavati Museum.
All 8 of the thatched chalets on site feature a four poster bed protected by a mosquito net, plus an ensuite bathroom with tub, shower and flushing toilet. Air conditioning is provided by an overhead fan and there are plenty of African artefacts in each room to delight the eye.
Someone’s had the measuring tape out, because you get 36 square metres of space to enjoy in your timber and stone chalet, each of which is 10 metres from the next, giving you a good degree of privacy.
Open the sliding doors from the bedroom and you’re straight onto your private deck with impressive views, not a bad way to start each day. And you can end each day out here too, sitting together on the safari chairs with a sundowner to hand, if you like.
At Kambaku Safari Lodge, guests can enjoy twice-daily game drives led by experienced guides and trackers through the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem and home to the Big Five. Morning and evening safaris offer excellent wildlife viewing, while guided bush walks provide a chance to explore the finer details of the bush on foot. For families, the lodge offers a dedicated junior ranger programme, making it a great option for children. Between activities, guests can relax by the pool, enjoy a book from the safari library or watch wildlife from the lodge’s hide overlooking the waterhole.
