This lodge claims to be the birthplace of conservation in the Eastern Cape, and by the looks of things, that important work is continuing.
Protecting the rhino population seems to be a priority, with a Rhino Conservation Project giving those majestic mammals a secure and safe natural habitat in which to live. Stay here, and you’ll get to see rhino up close, and possibly the rest of the Big 5 in a camp that sticks to its mantra of believing that man and nature together is sustainable.
Many reviews point to the five-star nature of the hospitality guests receive at the lodge, which is a 1940s manor house located on top of a hill – always a boost when it comes to views.
There are just 7 air conditioned suites here, all with kingsize beds, ensuite bathrooms and private verandas. Subject to availability, you can also book the Founders Railway Carriage, an experience that’s likely to appeal to a much wider demographic than just train enthusiasts. It has room for 5 guests and features a large outdoor deck with private swimming pool.
Yes, there’s a formal dining room where you can eat in the traditional way. But for a more casual experience, head out onto the terrace. Or why not get the camp team to lay on a picnic which you can enjoy at various locations on-site.
Young adventurers are welcome to join you here, with the camp’s Conservation Warriors Programme including a Bear Grylls Survival Academy Experience which sounds fun!
Billiards anyone? This classic game takes place on a snooker-size table of green baize in the bar, although you’ll need to put your drink down to play your shots.
The drawing room offers a relaxing place for conversation, reflection and refreshment with snugness provided by the fireplace. The library, museum and shop are other places you’re sure to want to visit at some point, and it’s the same with the swimming pools of which there are two, both outside – a good sign that warm weather is expected!
You can get close-up with the local wildlife in the photographic hide – rhino included - while the gym and steam room offer a chance to ensure all the relaxing you’ll do here doesn’t leave you out of shape.
On the more active side of things, a guided game drive in an open top 4x4 is bound to be on your list of to-dos. As well as rhino, giraffe are commonly sighted in the area.
