Built next to a permanent, private lagoon in the Okavango Delta, Daunara is a small, sustainability focused camp that’s just a short helicopter ride from Maun, a major town in northwestern Botswana.
It’s an area of varied landscapes – from floodplain to woodland, rivers to marshes dotted with islands.
The first of many photo opportunities you’ll have during your stay will likely happen at the entrance to the camp. That’s where you’ll find Big Dave keeping guard. He’s a life-size leopard sculpted in bronze, by the way, and is just one of the many contemporary features in a camp that’s totally run on renewable Photovoltaic energy. Yes, we had to look that up, and apparently, it’s clever technology that converts sunlight into electricity. Handy, as you can expect plenty of sun in this part of the world.
All tents are air-conditioned and designed to ensure you get the best views and the comfiest of sleeps. They all offer views of the lagoon, with the beds (either a double or 2 singles as you prefer) facing the water, with just glass patio doors and your outside deck in between. Suites include a minibar and coffee station, and one of the suites is double size with a connecting lounge to accommodate a family.
Follow the pathway from your suite to the central area where, you guessed it, there are views of the lagoon from pretty much everywhere. That’s certainly the case from the central lounge, bar, and dining area, all of which give you the chance to refresh or relax while hippo bathe in the water. The open kitchen gives you a chance to watch your meals being prepared, while the small fireplace provides a snug place to curl up with a book and a drink following your evening meal.
This central area also has space set aside for working out in a gym or for pulling a few yoga moves during your time in camp.
Big 5 spotting is the premier activity offered here. The team run day and night safaris, and you’re advised to experience both to give yourselves the best chance of seeing the biggest range of wildlife. Game walks are also on the activities list. On these adventures, you’ll be in the expert hands of guides who know all about the insect, plant and bird life in Okavango. And with around 450 bird species known to fly the skies in this part of Africa, it’s small wonder that birdwatchers are regulars on such expeditions. Fishing fans are also drawn to the catch and release fishing. Water based activities also extend to mokoro trips and river cruises, giving you the chance to get close to hippo and other water dwelling species.
A sky high view of the Okavango Delta in a helicopter is going to give you memories to treasure, not to mention a whole host of photo opportunities. Other activities include wine tasting, stargazing and cultural tours to visit and interact with local communities to see how they live and learn about their history and traditions.
