A typical day at Becks begins early if you’ve booked a safari, with a 5AM wake up call. Dawn starts give you the best chance to view the Big 5, so few people complain about having to rise at this time. And after hopefully seeing the mammals and birdlife you’ve perhaps only ever seen on TV or in a zoo before, you’ll be back to camp for a 9AM breakfast.
After that, time is yours to spend as you wish – maybe catch up on sleep or take a dip in the swimming pool - until your lunch is served. This can be followed by an afternoon game drive or another activity you’ve booked (see your options below).
Whatever you get up to, dinner at around 7:30PM followed by drinks and relaxation around the fire pit will help you round off the kind of day that sticks in the memory.
It all happens in and around a lodge on the banks of the Makhutswi River in the 9,000 hectare Karongwe Game Reserve, just 45 mins drive from Kruger National Park.
Kruger is home to the Big 5, as well as brown and spotted hyena, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and more. While seeing all the wildlife you want to see can never be guaranteed, views of the Drakensberg Mountains can, with the peaks looking particularly alluring at sunset with a sundowner in hand.
Becks has 10 luxury safari suites constructed from a combination of brick, metal and canvas. So there’ll only ever be a maximum of 20 guests in camp at any one time.
Each suite is furnished individually, but the ten do share some common features such as air conditioning, a kingsize bed, ensuite bathroom, exterior shower, and private veranda from where you can view the comings and goings along the river and at the waterhole.
All guests will gravitate toward the main lodge at some point during their stay for eating, drinking and relaxing.
There’s a dining room, bar and boma with firepit for refreshments of all kinds – meals, snacks, teas, coffees, something a bit stronger, perhaps?
The relaxation is taken care of by the lounge with fireplace, the library with a decent selection of books and sofas to enjoy them on, the spa and its array of treatments, the 20m infinity swimming pool, and the viewing deck with seating you can kick back on and watch nature’s show on a stage that’s formed of riverbed and floodplain.
You’ll want to take your seat aboard an open safari vehicle for at least one of the dawn and dusk game drives led by experienced trackers and rangers. They’ll head off-road if the need arises to get you closer to as many of the 40 mammal and 365 bird species as is safe and practical to do so.
For the chance to get even closer to cheetah, you can ditch the four wheels and use your own two feet to explore the bushveld, led by trackers who’ll know the best places to find these speedsters of the plains.
To help you capture the best photos of your adventures, so you’re proud to share your shots with friends and family back home, the camp puts on a workshop hosted by an expert photographer. They’ll share tips and tricks on how to take pro-style photos that’ll remind you of your time on safari.
Other activities the Becks team can arrange for you include gin tasting out in the wild, a hike to Beacon Rock, balloon rides over the Sabie River Valley, interactive cooking experiences with the camp chefs, and helicopter trips.
