Founded in 2010 by Anja Rohwer, the DRC Women’s Community Project began with a vision to uplift this disadvantaged community. The project's momentum was greatly enhanced by a remarkable donation of N$9 million from Dr Annedore Knak, a German doctor. Despite her terminal illness, Dr Knak remained committed to the cause until her death in 2017, honouring her pledge with the substantial donation.
Her contribution was instrumental in purchasing land and constructing a state-of-the-art off-grid community centre, which was completed at a total cost of N$12 million. Officially inaugurated on 30 November 2022, the new centre stands as a symbol of hope and progress for the DRC community. It boasts a range of facilities, including a preschool with capacity for over 100 children, an early childhood development centre, and a soup kitchen that provides meals twice a week.
Additionally, the centre features a fully equipped sewing workshop that empowers women to develop new skills and become economically self-reliant. A vegetable and fruit garden further supports the centre’s feeding programmes, ensuring that the children and community members have access to fresh produce. The centre also offers after-school homework support, reinforcing its role as a crucial community resource.
The DRC Women’s Community Project has not only enhanced local skill development but also facilitated the creation and sale of crafts, contributing positively to the local economy. Thanks to the continued support from donors and organisations, the centre continues to thrive and extend its services.
The success of the DRC Women’s Community Project is a testament to the power of collaborative effort and the impact of generous giving. Through the dedication of individuals such as Anja Rohwer, the late Dr Annedore Knak, and numerous supporters, the project has fostered meaningful change and provided "A Brighter Future for Women and Children in Swakopmund, Namibia".
NTS proudly supports the DRC project by buying beaded key rings, donating school bags and educational materials as well as books, desks, computers and clothing. You can too support this project too - just ask us how.
