Is it safe to self-drive in Namibia - especially if you’re travelling alone?

Yes - Namibia is generally a very safe place to self-drive, even if you’re travelling on your own. Most people are surprised by how quiet and open the country feels, and crime is usually not the main concern.

The bigger thing to be aware of is the driving itself. Distances are long, many roads are gravel, and you need to slow down and plan properly. Stick to daytime driving, don’t rush between places and you’ll be just fine.

With a good vehicle, a sensible route and support on hand if you need it, solo self-drive is quite common - it just suits travellers who are happy to be independent and take things at an easy pace. Read more about travelling solo in Namibia.
