Where once the iconic Khwai River Lodge stood, there is now a modern and upgraded destination that’s ripe for 21st Century safari enthusiasts to enjoy.
Opened in March 2026 by one of Botswana’s most trusted safari operators, Sediba Sa Rona is set in the midst of one of the country’s largest concentrations of wildlife. Located in the shadow of fig and leadwood trees, the new camp was built and is run with a spirit of community and a culture of connection at its heart.
The Khwai River flows in front of the property, providing a vital lifeline for local wildlife and plenty of opportunities for guests to get close to amazing land and water based mammals.
One link with the past lies in the number of places to stay. While the old lodge had 15 rooms, now there are 15 luxury tents, so the maximum number of guests on the site at any one time is the same as it always was - 30.
Two of the tents are designed for families, all have a Wi-Fi connection and large beds enveloped by canopies. Dressing spaces and places to sit and relax are provided. The ensuite bathroom features a shower, twin wash basins and a WC, while your private outdoor deck affords you impressive views of the river.
Meals are shared together at a large table in the dining area – although you can arrange to eat in private if you prefer. Before and after dinner, guests tend to congregate in the bar, one of the lounges or in the outdoor viewing area. Other popular gathering spots throughout the day are the swimming pool and the fire deck which faces the river, so is good for animal sightings.
The camp’s curio shop is sure to tempt you to browse at some point. It’s stocked with books, clothing, jewellery, and arts and crafts which make great self-treats or take-home gifts for friends and family. And you’re unlikely to want your stay here to pass without picking a spa treatment or two from the camp’s wellness menu.
Adventures on the river and floodplains. You can explore the shallow channels of the Khwai River in a canoe-like mokoro, with a safari guide propelling you through the water. It’s a leisurely way to see sights that could include hippo, while enjoying the plant and other life that calls the water home.
Birdwatching is always rewarding whatever time of year you visit the camp. You’re likely to see an array of kingfishers, as well as African fish eagle. Less likely, but not impossible, is a sighting of the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.
On land, game drives departing camp in the mornings and afternoons will give you a chance to photograph elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and more. You can request a night safari, which lifts the lid on nocturnal happenings on the floodplains. And you can spread your wings and head into the Moremi Game Reserve, or book a helicopter flight over the region. Other trips you can book for an extra cost include the Ultimate Makgadikgadi Pans adventure, a sleep-out on the Tsodilo Hills and tiger fishing in the Okavango Delta.
