Crispy clean en suite rooms are equipped with air conditioning and heating units, satellite TV, wi-fi and a private balcony. The bar is open until 9pm and the buffet breakfast ticks all the wholesome and fruity boxes. Just around the corner and literally in the lagoon itself, the Raft is a great place for a lively sundowner and the Lyon des Sables is arguably one of the finest restaurants in the country.
While most people choose to stay at the more tourist-friendly town of Swakopmund about 40km up-coast, Walvis Bay lagoon is a destination in its own right. A RAMSAR wetlands site, the lagoon is rich in sea-life attracting great flocks of flamingoes, pelicans, plovers, terns, cormorants, and gulls or depending on who's dropping by mid- migration.
A marine cruise on Walvis Bay Lagoon is the aquatic version of a game drive safari with dolphins, seals, turtles, whales, mola-mola and all those birds on display. All this while sipping on a glass of bubbly and knocking back some home-grown oysters. Beats a day at the office wouldn't you say? And what better base than the Oyster Box Guesthouse on the edge of the lagoon?
Walvis: Bird watching, marine cruise, fishing, sea kayaking, desert tour, scenic flights, paragliding, quad biking, sand boarding. From Swakopmund: skydiving, camel riding, horse riding, golf, township tour, museum, aquarium.
