Encounter by Ongava (formerly Ongava Tented Camp) is an intimate safari lodge in a private reserve adjacent to Etosha National Park; the camp's en suite tented rooms face a floodlit waterhole.

Formerly known as Ongava Tented Camp, Encounter by Ongava reflects a return to presence and a closer, more immersive way of meeting the wild. Set within a secluded valley at the foot of a dolomite hill in the exclusive 30,000-hectare Ongava Reserve, it is a place where wildlife moves freely and each stay unfolds without script - the name Encounter speaking directly to the essence of the experience.
Encounter by Ongava offers well-appointed safari accommodation with a light footprint, built with minimal impact on the land and fronting a busy waterhole. Long regarded as one of Namibia’s finest safari lodges, it remains an intimate and authentic base for exploring both Ongava Reserve and neighbouring Etosha.
The camp features seven tented suites and one family unit, each built on raised wooden decks with doorway entrances, en suite bathrooms, open-air showers and private verandas overlooking the surrounding wilderness.
The main lodge is a homely blend of thatch, timber and stone, housing the lounge, dining area, bar and a large open veranda with a shaded plunge pool. Untended bush gently encroaches into the camp, enhancing its earthy, rustic and deeply connected back-to-nature appeal.
Overlooking a floodlit waterhole; game drives into Etosha; guided walks and safaris in the private Ongava Reserve, which has game-viewing hides and waterholes; black and white rhino tracking; white rhino approaching; elephant approaching; visit the Ongava Research Centre.
In Ongava Reserve, which is situated on the southern edge of Etosha National Park, there are good numbers of lion, eland, Hartmann's mountain zebra, the endemic black-faced impala, other antelope and more. A highlight of the private reserve is a walking safari in which you track both black and white rhino or do white rhino approaching– with an armed ranger of course.
Activities include game drives into Etosha and walks and safaris in the private reserve, which also has several game-viewing hides and waterholes.
Ongava Tented Camp exemplifies its commitment to sustainability through effective management of water and waste facilities, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The lodge prioritises sourcing groceries locally, supporting nearby farmers and reducing food miles. Additionally, by employing locals from the community, Ongava Tented Camp not only provides job opportunities but also fosters a deeper connection between guests and the surrounding culture. These initiatives reflect the lodge's dedication to promoting responsible tourism while contributing positively to the local environment and economy. Here you will also find The Ongava Research Centre, an independently funded hub dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the African bush's wildlife and ecology. Researchers from around the world contribute to vital studies on animal behaviour, migration, and conservation, exploring how species interact with their environment. The adjoining visitor centre offers fascinating insights into Ongava Private Game Reserve’s history, flora, fauna, and the future of sustainable tourism. Additionally, the centre provides a unique stargazing experience, enhancing the immersive, educational journey at this pioneering research and conservation hub.
