And it's not just remoteness that makes Kalahari Plains Camp attractive. The wildlife safari and wilderness experience are amazing, especially in the rainy summers of Botswana when the semi-arid desert turns idyllic. Huge herds of plains game move in a like a rattle-snake - with a lethal tail of predators including the legendary black-maned lions as well as cheetah, hyena and wild dog.
Your stay is rustic with essential comforts covered and even some little luxuries thrown in. But don't expect the WiFi, cable TV and 24-hour bubbly on call, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is Botswana's impenetrable back of beyond wilderness. A place only the San hunter/gatherers - Africa's gentle custodians - know how to survive out here where 4WD, diff-lock and traction-control are as nothing to the soft sand of the Kalahari.
Accommodation at Kalahari Plains Camp comprises just eight safari tents, each raised above the ground on wooden platforms for an endless view across the acacia grassland plains of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Completely self-sufficient and eco-friendly, the en suite bathrooms have flushing eco-toilets and solar-heated bucket showers; the living area is an open-sided tent on a wooden deck with comfortable sofas . Dine under the stars in the shelter of the living tent overlooking the plains.
Game drives in the Kalahari; San "bushman" experience; excellent birding in summer from November to March when the rains come.
The sleep-out experience is a must. A star bed under a million starred sky. This is an activity in itself.
