Looking for somewhere quirky that’s off-grid and a little left field? Welcome to Hluhluwe, an eco-friendly, solar powered camp offering a variety of comfortable and yes, somewhat unique places to stay.
More about those shortly, but firstly a bit about the location. It’s close to Kruger National Park, the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park where beaches meet forest and provide homes for hippo, crocodile and way too many species of bird to name here.
Eco-friendliness is the big watchword around here, with inverters, generators, and even a water treatment plant all on site. They’re all behind the scenes, working away to ensure the camp doesn’t negatively impact the environment. Upfront are the swimming pool and deck with loungers, and what’s known as the Farmstall, the place you go for essentials as well as snacks and drinks, breakfasts and BBQs.
Now to the accommodation, which we’ve listed in ascending order of quirkiness:
These are for the glampers – kitted out with amenities the modern traveller can’t do without. They also have a private deck. So far, so normal.
Interesting name, which basically means that you get a more genuine, less glam camping experience. You’ll find all the essentials you need, with an electricity powered fridge and cooker plus two single beds along with a private outdoor bathroom.
For those of you who like your tents a bit more Native American, these are for you. Staying in one is a unique experience that’s definitely something to text home about. Four can sleep in here on single beds and mattresses.
This is one of a kind in the camp, hence it gets a name of its own. Located in a secluded field, it’s open on one side so that stargazers get an uninterrupted view of the sky. Breakfast and dinner can be served here, but you’ll need to use to communal facilities for your comfort breaks, if you catch our drift.
This provides the icing on the cake when it comes to quirkiness. Poppy the caravan offers you somewhere unconventional and nostalgic to call home in the middle of the African bush. Two double beds provide the sleeping spaces and there’s a kitchen with fridge and stove.
Guests at Hluhluwe Bush Camp can immerse themselves in a variety of activities that showcase the rich biodiversity of the region. The nearby False Bay Park, part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, offers hiking and mountain biking trails where visitors can encounter wildlife such as nyalas and red duikers. Additionally, the camp's proximity to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park allows for self-drive or guided game drives to observe the Big Five. For water enthusiasts, the St Lucia Estuary provides opportunities for boat cruises, fishing, and bird watching. The camp's own 'Kambusha Trail' offers a serene walking experience through the bush, allowing guests to connect with nature at their own pace.
