The reserve is 40,000 hectares of sun-drenched, grass-covered, acacia-dotted hills typical of Namibia's central highlands and, a hop and skip from the country's capital, just aching to be explored.
Sun Karros is a small, comfortable safari lodge in the Daan Viljoen Game Reserve on the edge of a small dam in the Khomas Hochland mountains. Accommodation is in 19 enormous chalets, built in the rondavel style of a traditional hut and coated with the warm colours of Africa.
Air conditioned with en suite bathrooms, private balconies overlooking the dam, satellite TV, mini-bar and luxury beds, the chalets offer the perfect start or end to your African holiday - either to revive the spirits after a long flight or to come down gently out of the glory of the African bush.
The reserve has no dangerous animals so you can stretch your legs at will on several hiking trails that take in the wonderful views, the evocative smells and the great big Namibian skies. Wildlife you're likely to see include giraffe, eland, Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, klipspringer, baboons and black-backed jackal. Of the 200-plus bird species on record, Namibian endemics include Ruppell's parrot, white- tailed shrike, Monteiro's hornbill and Damara Hornbill if you're very lucky.
The main lodge has a restaurant, bar and swimming pool as well as a curio shop for those last-minute gifts to take home as evidence of your Amazing Namibian Adventure.
