Rattray's on MalaMala

Please note: Our review of this property has not yet been added. Watch this space. We're working on it.

As a tailor-made tour operator, we often have to get creative when designing your perfect itinerary.

For example, your travel consultant might add this property to your itinerary if:

Location is a significant factor
It offers a unique feature that will enhance your experience
This is a last-minute booking and room availability is limited
Cost is a factor and you'd rather splash out on another part of your trip
This is a newly opened or refurbished property that we have not inspected yet

When designing your custom itinerary we have much to consider not least of which is the value proposition of every product and service included in your quote. In all cases we strive to give you the best experience possible within your budget so please feel free to ask your travel consultant to share their reasons for including this property in your itinerary.

Rattray’s on MalalMala is the flagship luxury safari lodge in the MalaMala Game Reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Eight vast private suites - each with twin bathrooms, private decks and heated plunge pools – are shaded by ancient trees and look out over the Sand River in the 65,000ha Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve.

Rattray’s is a colonial-styled lodge with exquisite finishes in leather, crystal and all the finery of British aristocracy. The lodge has been built in the traditional farmstead style of early southern Africa settlers with corrugated iron roofs, colonnaded walkways and massive wrap-around verandahs.

This elegant safari lodge has eight elevated bungalows - they cheekily call them khayas, which means home in the local Zulu language. Each suite has a large private deck with a heated private plunge pool with views over the Sand River; twin bathrooms with an outdoor shower; and private indoor and outdoor dining areas for the last word in romance.

The main house at Rattray’s on MalaMala features a sumptuous leather-bound lounge and cosy bar area; the large verandah leads down to the main swimming pool and the whole lodge faces the river and a scene of African bush like you’ve always dreamed of.

With 20km of river frontage and a vast expanse of uninhabited wilderness, the wildlife and nature experiences at MalaMala are some of the world’s most spectacular. Wildlife activities include daily game drives, bush walks, night drives and stargazing.

MalaMala is famed for its leopard and you are almost assured of seeing this beautiful predator on a two-night stay. In addition to fascinating insight into the trees, reptiles and smaller creatures, frequent wildlife sightings include lion, rhino, buffalo and elephant, numerous antelope species, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, jackal and the endangered wild dog and cheetah.
