The team that’s opening Monachira Camp has experience of running sister camps in Botswana. So their latest venture promises more of the same great safaris and equally impressive customer service.
They’ve named their newest camp after the channel of water that flows alongside the location which is in the northeastern reaches of the Okavango Delta in the Moremi Game Reserve.
If you’re visiting in 2025, you’ll get the chance to experience all the newness of the place, the smell of fresh built wooden decks raised above ground on equally new stilts.
You’ll also be among the first to experience the views from the camp’s lofty location, overlooking floodplains that will be alive with all kinds of wildlife.
Oh, and did we mention that the only way to get here is via helicopter? Well, we’ve mentioned it now.
Although water based opportunities to interact with animals such as elephant and various bird species are the focus here, you can still safari on dry land from camp. Expect an early start for the daily game drives with cars usually leaving at around 6am. It gives you the best chance of seeing animals having their morning feed, and you’ll usually be back in camp by 11 for a feed yourself, as that’s when brunch is served.
The rest of the day is yours to fill as you wish. Perhaps with a nature walk, or a water activity such as motor boating or a more leisurely trip aboard a canoe-like mokoro vessel, gently paddling through the waterlilies. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it?
The islands and wetlands that encircle the camp provide plenty of scope for exploration and help explain the great diversity of wildlife in the area. That’s aptly illustrated by the Gudigwa Heronries, a place close to camp where thousands upon thousands of heron, stork and egret come to nest – well worth a visit.
If you’ve come to see bigger, more safari style wildlife, you won’t be disappointed, as lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant are known to frequent the area. You also have a fair chance of seeing the rare Pels Fishing Owl.
There’s room for 24 guests at any one time in camp, with 8 tents sporting either twin beds or a double, and two family tents accommodating four guests each, across two bedrooms, both of which have their own bathroom.
Children of all ages are welcome to join you here, although it’s worth knowing there’s a minimum age of 12 for the mokoro activity and 16 for the nature walks.
All types of tents have reed screens to give you privacy, plus canvas doorways you can roll open and closed as you please – a great way of getting fresh air to flow through where you stay.
You can also arrange for a spa therapist to visit your room and deliver treatments.
At the heart of the communal areas of camp is a lounge for, well lounging around in, and a separate dining room with individual tables. And then there’s the Sunset Bar, its name suggesting you ought to head here in the early evening for a sundowner.
A firepit will be lit to help you round off your day relaxing, and there’s a plunge pool in which you can cool off anytime.
Guests at Monachira can enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles, guided nature walks across delta islands, tranquil mokoro canoe excursions and seasonal boating safaris. Birdwatching is exceptional – especially near the nearby heronry – and stargazing around the firepit under the vast delta sky is a highlight. Each day offers a mix of wildlife viewing on land and water, tailored to the season and water levels.
