There’s a saying that good things come in threes, and this 3-day tour certainly packs in plenty of safari experiences as well as opportunities to relax and enjoy the good life.
The location? The Okonjima, a family-run nature reserve 220 km north of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city and west of the Waterberg Plateau Plain.
This beautiful, wildlife rich reserve spans over 200 square kilometres, its terrain a mix of undulating plains, commercial farmland and the Omboroko Mountains.
For those of you who like to know the meanings of place names (you know who you are) Okonjima is Herero for ‘Place of the Baboons’, one of the many types of wildlife you’ll get to witness in their natural habitat on this exciting and informative tour.
All kinds of protected, rare and endangered species make their home here at the reserve, with visitors drawn to Okonjima by the chance to track and get up close to two of the Big 5: rhino and leopard.
The conservation work that goes on at Okonjima also helps explain its popularity. It’s the home of the AfriCat Foundation, which has a mission to conserve Namibia’s biggest carnivorous cats – chiefly the leopard.
Day 1 - 3: Okonjima Mobile Camp - all inclusive
Day 1:
On the way: Getting to the reserve takes two and a half hours driving north from Windhoek. Or you can fly in an hour.
While you travel, the camp crew will be busy pitching your canvas tent and arranging your beds. There’ll be two single beds either side of the tent’s entrance which features a canopy under which you can sit and relax, enjoying snacks, meals and drinks along with some spectacular views. There’s another seating area at the rear of your tent, with a roof and coverings on all sides giving you space to relax in privacy if you prefer.
When you’re there: A refreshing drink will be waiting to welcome you to the Reserve after your journey. Your excitement levels are likely to be sky high as you listen in to a short briefing during which the ins and outs of the camp and its facilities will be explained, and the details of the tour itinerary laid out.
After some settling in time, it’s off on an afternoon guided walk you go, your first chance to spy some local wildlife. It’s also a chance to grab your first sundowner, a tipple you can sip while enjoying some spectacular views of the reserve.
Dinner will be served back at camp under a stretch tent, after which you can choose to head back to your own tent to catch some shut eye ahead of your early start tomorrow. But you might want to squeeze every new experience you can out of your adventure and gather around the campfire with other guests, swapping stories or getting in some stargazing before heading to bed. Don’t forget to set your alarm for an early start tomorrow.
Day 2:
The early bird catches sight of the rhino. OK, so it’s not an official saying around these parts, but it rings true and explains why you’ll need to set your alarm for the small hours, so that you’re ready to head out into the bush bright and early in search of big rhino.
Leading the way will be expert Bushman trackers who’ll happily share tips with you, so you can impress friends and family with your rhino tracking techniques when you get back home.
But home will be far from your mind as you observe these epic mammals in their natural habitat, something that qualifies as a once in a lifetime experience in anyone’s book. Eventually, you’ll have to tear yourself away from this wondrous sight as a tasty lunch will be served back at camp, after which you can relax, maybe taking a siesta after marvelling at the rhino photos you took earlier.
Following snoozing in your tent or browsing the books in the camp library, with a cup of tea or coffee and slice of delicious cake never too far away, when the clock strikes 4PM it’ll be time for the afternoon’s activity.
Taking your seat in an open-sided game vehicle, you’ll head out on a drive to observe another of the Big 5 in their natural environment – leopard. Two once-in-a-lifetime wild animal spotting experiences in one day? That’s certainly on the cards on this tour, as leopards are commonly sighted on the Okonjima Reserve, so you’ve a good chance of enjoying more photo opportunities.
Back at camp, it’ll be time to refresh and reflect with a sundowner followed by dinner under the stars to round off the last night of your tour.
Day 3:
You won’t have to wake quite so early on this, the final morning of your experience. But the smell of breakfast wafting in the air will undoubtedly draw you to the dining area, where refreshments will be waiting to set you up to leave camp and head off on the next stage of your Namibian adventure.
