Just like film and rock stars, some camps change their name. And what was once the Zibadianja Camp is now the Zarafa. This refurbished destination is certainly fit for Hollywood stars (you can only get here by plane), and is every bit a five-star safari experience.
That’s because this really is a spectacular place to stay among the ebony and ivory trees on the Selinda Reserve, with the accommodation top drawer and the safari guides and the service the camp team delivers of the highest order.
Much has changed along with the name, although the lagoon the camp overlooks still carries the Zibadianja moniker, and the wildlife that visits the area is as plentiful and diverse as it’s always been.
Zarafa’s reputation for exclusivity is well earned. There’s capacity here for just 8 guests at any one time. Each of the quartet of raised, air conditioned tents is spaced far enough apart from the next to ensure your privacy, as you would expect. Inside is split into three distinct areas – one for sleeping, one for freshening up, the other for sitting, viewing (and perhaps snacking). Across all three, the furnishings are dark wood, sofas vintage leather, and there’s a gas fireplace to treasure if you’re staying in winter.
Luxurious touches include a minibar and small library in each tent. And you won’t be able to resist peering through the telescope for some star gazing at night and wildlife spotting during daylight hours. Not many camps give their guests a professional camera to use during their stay. That’s the case here. And even though the camera stays behind for the next guests, you can take home the USB drive with all your shots stored on it.
You can also bathe in a copper bath, freshen up under the shower and splash your face in one of the two washbasins in the bathroom. Outside, the deck is big enough to give you space for sitting and enjoying the views, a plunge pool, as well as an enclosed, private area for a shower.
In keeping with the style and panache of the camp’s accommodation and activities, communal services and facilities are exceptional. The only way to stay is on a full board basis, and that will include all meals plus a good selection of drinks. As well as the dining room, there’s a lounge and bar, plus library and a deck on which you can eat your meals overlooking the lagoon. The fire pit attracts people for morning coffees and drinks either side of dinner. Plus you’ll likely be tempted to browse the on-site curio shop to take home a souvenir or two.
Game drives are the highlight of the activities offered to guests. Two leave camp daily, one to ensure you get to view daytime activities in the delta, the other giving you insights into nocturnal goings on. What can you expect to see? There are no guarantees of course, but lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant, cheetah and wild dog are frequently spotted in the area, so too zebra, giraffe and hippo. Most guests sample both types of safari at some point during their stay, and many are tempted by the chance to discover the insects, plants and birds that a walking safari provides access to. Lagoon cruises and a young explorer’s programme are among the other activities offered by the team.
Also popular for watching wildlife are the viewing platforms and hides dotted around camp, places you can go anytime of day to get a fresh angle on the animals visiting the lagoon. Zarafa also has a gym for those of you keen to keep in shape on your break.
