Ask for a pitch by the river and watch that Hoanib flow. Well, it doesn’t always because it’s one of those ephemeral rivers but the animals know there’s water lurking beneath. This will definitely be a rustic camping experience but you can use the facilities at the lodge. Just bear in mind, the lodge is approx half a kilometre away.
There are 10 camping pitches with 220V mains electricity. Don’t get too excited, it can be temperamental.
Same goes for the communal ablutions, there are hot water showers with a good water pressure but sometimes these give up the ghost and stop working. In other words, don’t 100% rely on it. Give yourself a once over under the Ongongo waterfall - a 10km drive away - but lush and worth it.
There’s lots of space between pitches so you’ll have privacy. The pitches away from the river are less shaded.
There’s also full access to the lodge facilities: SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY. And that’s the caveat. If you want dinner at the lodge, pre book it, but bear in mind the rocky road back to the campsite is not lit so bring your torch. Same goes for the tours - lodge guests get priority.
But you can always swim and make some friends in the little tub of a pool. Don’t panic if you’ve left your towel in your tent - you can get one at the bar. And whilst you’re there get some chips and a beer. Rude not to really.
There are hiking trails along the river from the campsite.
Lodge activities include looking for desert elephants, trips to the indigenous Himba tribes’ villages, rock art trips and bird watching excursions.
Or just enjoy being in the middle of nowhere in the Namibian desert.
