The Tsauchab River. With giant wild fig trees and clear springs. An ephemeral stream in the southern Naukluft Mountains. You’ll be right beside it. A natural phenomenon, it only flows when the rain falls and then it becomes the main source of water to Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei. Eventually, it all ends abruptly in a dry lake at the foot of the world’s highest dunes.
The camp here is surrounded by the Tsaris, Naukluft and Roter Kamm Mountains. It was originally an old farm that started life in 1911. By the 1930s it was being used as the base camp for two leading German geologists Henno Martin and Herman Korn.
Now it’s being run by a Namibian couple who call this place home. Chalets and campsites and hot bread, straight from the oven. In fact, all goods are home cooked. And there are culinary options - brunch packs, lunch packs, light lunch, dinner and dinner baskets can be prepared. Or, just buy what you need from the small farm shop - fresh bread, garden salads, and a variety of meats.
You can hike, mountain bike, go on game drives or just wander up to various sundowner points. Both guided and un-guided options are available but you must book guided trips on arrival, subject to availability.
There are five different hiking trails which vary in length from 2.5km to 21km. All ages can be accommodated too.
There’s the Mountain Zebra Hike; the Kudu hike - this leads you up to kudu in the Rooikop Mountain; the Quiver Tree Hike and the entirely perfect sounding hour and a half Wild Fig Stroll. Bird watch alongside the old wild fig trees and natural springs. Finally, the Namib Desert View Walk is a 1.4 km one way trail with great views into the Namib Desert.
You can also go on the 4x4 Kilpsringer trail in the Tsaris Mountains. This overlaps with the 21km hiking trail and accommodates both experienced and non experienced 4x4 enthusiasts.
If you want to travel further, you can book on a trip to Namib Naukluft Quivertree Forest. This dense forest is on a hidden valley in the Namib Desert.
Finally, don’t forget to get yourself sorted at a good sundowner point too. There are three, Tsaris View, Eagle View and Platkop View. You can go with a guide or on your own. Take it all in.
