Half way between Victoria Falls and Bulawayo and far from the crowds on the southern border of Zimbabwe's biggest game reserve, Bomani Tented Lodge occupies a 2,000-hectare chunk of African bush that is all yours.
The lodge is on the edge of a pre-historic lakebed that is now the game-studded Ngamo Plain 10km across and about as classic an African scene as you can get outside of a Hollywood studio. Acacia and leadwood trees dot the plains and zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and elephants criss-cross them like Piccadilly Circus and all about birds come and go on a busy quest for fame, fortune and a brightly coloured mate.
Bomani Tented Lodge has nine tented suites and one thatched family bungalow all spaced well apart from each other for maximum privacy. Half the suites look out from an elevated vantage point across the Ngamo Plain the other half faces a busy waterhole at ground level. All have plenty of space, luxurious beds, en suite bathrooms and shaded front patios from which to enjoy the spectacle.
The open-fronted main lodge, featuring a lounge and dining area, is slightly elevated with a polished screed floor under a canopy of thatch supported by gnarled tree trunks. A teak viewing deck extends out under the stars to show off the incredible night skies that only Africa can offer.
The Bomani private reserve is in the Ngamo Forest Area and you also have a private entrance into Hwange National Park proper. Game drives, day and night, take you in search of the parks many elephants, abundant lion and some of the more elusive predators like cheetah, leopard, hyena and jackals. Thanks to a variety of habitats the mammal and bird diversity is astonishing with some claiming Hwange to be the most diverse park in all of Africa. We'll leave that fact to the scientists to debate but rest assured: a safari in Hwange is among the finest game-viewing experiences you'll ever have. And Bomani is, again debatably, one of the best places to stay in Hwange, we'll leave the conclusion and the debating up to you.
