Born in Otjibingwe, Namibia, Josef Lesley Tjihara, commonly known as Lesley, spent his childhood in Windhoek. The eldest of three children, he was raised by his grandmother alongside 30 other non-related children, an upbringing that instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility and resilience. Lesley attended Technical High School, where he completed his Grade 12, before pursuing further training in guiding (NTA Level 4). He also undertook soft leadership training, which has helped him to develop a balanced approach to leadership.
Lesley’s career in the tourism and hospitality industry spans over 17 years, beginning as a guide at Wolwedans, one of Namibia’s most renowned desert lodges. His deep passion for Namibia’s landscapes and wildlife led him to take on key leadership roles in guiding. As Head Guide at Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), Lesley further developed his leadership skills, managing teams and ensuring top-notch safari experiences for international visitors.
In addition to his work at NWR, Lesley worked as a Freelance Tour Guide for Nature Friends Safari and later at Namibian Exclusive, where he took on the dual role of Fleet Controller and guide. His experience in both guiding and fleet management proved invaluable, positioning him as a key member of the team. At NTS, Lesley is responsible for overseeing the company’s fleet operations, ensuring that all vehicles are properly maintained and ready for the adventures that visitors embark on across Namibia. His extensive knowledge of the country’s diverse terrain and the operational challenges of managing a fleet in such an environment makes him a vital part of the team.
Lesley’s career has also taken him across Africa, with trips to Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, as well as further afield to Belgium. His favourite destination remains Angola, especially the Kalandula Falls and Mirandour a da Lua, both of which continue to inspire his sense of adventure.
Outside of work, Lesley enjoys playing chess, a hobby that allows him to exercise his strategic thinking. He is also deeply devoted to his family - married for 17 years and a father of three, he is also a proud grandparent to three grandchildren. Family plays a central role in Lesley’s life, and he takes great pride in the bonds he shares with his loved ones.
Lesley’s future vision includes establishing a retirement villa aimed at restoring dignity to older generations - an idea close to his heart that reflects his caring and thoughtful nature.
Lesley lives by the belief that “Nothing is as difficult as it seems, experience your own resilience.” This philosophy shapes both his personal and professional approach, encouraging him to tackle challenges with resilience and patience. He also finds meaning in a favourite travel quote by Bill Murray: “They say an elephant never forgets, what they don’t tell you is that you never forget an elephant.” This quote encapsulates the profound and lasting impact of his experiences in guiding, especially those involving wildlife.
One of Lesley’s most cherished memories from his guiding days is the emotional reaction of clients at the end of a successful safari “The smiles and tears of clients at the airport after a great tour.” It serves as a reminder of the deep emotional impact that exceptional travel experiences can have on people.
His travel tip is simple: “Always remember you are on holiday and enjoy it.” Lesley’s philosophy is all about balance, encouraging others to appreciate the journey and take full advantage of their time away.
Our guides are exceptional human beings one and all. Their love of people, country, history, flora, fauna and a jolly good time is entirely contagious and their professionalism, expertise and trustworthiness will set your heart at ease from the moment you leave the arrivals terminal.
