Unlike the ephemeral Scottish village, Brigadoon B&B is a permanent fixture in Swakopmund and, thanks to its exceptional service and prime location, a perennial contender for best bed and breakfast accommodation in town. Brigadoon was the first of its kind in Swakopmund, opening in 1996 long before the hospitality circus came to town. Hence its ideal location minutes from both the town centre and the sea - but nicely sheltered from said sea behind a row of apartments. A few minutes' walk, as you do in Swakopmund, gets you to the beach, the lighthouse, restaurants, cafes, pubs, museums, galleries and markets.
With a landscaped garden at its heart, each room has a separate entrance that doubles as your own breakfast patio. And the breakfasts are the stuff of legend. Not for size or any avant guard fusion styles but for their simple quality and elegant presentation. The secluded garden setting doesn't hurt either, although you might need to wrap up on wintry mornings.
Inside, the rooms are large, designerly affairs having had a recent nip-tuck and a fresh lick of paint a la mode: a monochromatic treatment of desert-meets-sea. Also trending, in this part of the world at least, is the open-plan bathroom concept, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, minibar and coffee stations complete the boutique B&B picture.
Most Important Meal Of The Day out the way - and thoroughly enjoyed without doubt - Swakopmund is on your doorstep for the taking. Discover the living desert, explore the Walvis Bay lagoon, ride through the Moon Landscape or play a round in one of the world's few all-grass desert golf courses complete with springbok and resident birdlife. Whatever your preference, there's a lot more to Swakopmund than a quirky seaside town.
