How to get around Botswana, Namibia, Victoria Falls and Zambia

Botswana

Botswana has international airports at Maun and Kasane – with such jewels up north, Gabarone is seldom featured as a tourist destination. Maun receives a throng of daily arrivals from Jo'burg, Livingstone, Lusaka, Victoria Falls and Windhoek. Kasane features to a lesser extent and is used mostly by domestic and light regional flights. The domestic light aircraft industry is well established in Botswana with many lodges having private airstrips.

How you get there and how you get around Botswana depends entirely on your itinerary. Talk to your Travel Expert before purchasing your long-haul or inbound flights – we can save you money and time and give you the best combination of destinations possible.

Namibia

The international airport is about 40km from Windhoek. Commercial shuttles operate between the city centre and the airport and most hotels offer transfers. If you are on a guided tour, your guide will meet you at the airport.

In Windhoek several taxi services will get you around easily. Taxis cannot be hailed, they can only be requested by telephone where you give your current location and a taxi will come to you. We do not recommend public transport as it is unreliable and requires a fair amount of local knowledge.

We provide a meet-and-greet service at Windhoek airport giving you all the relevant travel information and your detailed itinerary and booking confirmations.

Zambia

Lusaka International receives daily international flights from British Airways, South African Airways, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines. Livinstone, Victoria Falls and Mfue (near South Luangwa) also have international airports with most flights arriving from Johannesburg and Maun in Botswana.

With such high rainfall, the roads in Zambia can be arduous. Add to that the vast distances between destinations and you'll see why a self-drive tour of Zambia is recommended only for the adventurous traveller with some experience of Africa.

Zambia's major attractions - South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue and Victoria Falls - are serviced by commercial private airlines offering scheduled departures and private charters. All the remote camps and safari lodges in Zambia are accessible by air and have small airstrips nearby. Meet-and-greet services and transfers from airport to lodge are always included in your itinerary.

Victoria Falls

Serviced by international airports on both sides of the river - Livingstone International on the Zambian side and Victoria Falls International on the Zimbabwean side - Victoria Falls is accessible from Cape Town, Jo'burg, Europe and as an add-on from Botswana, Namibia and Zambia.

Transfers by road from Botswana, Namibia and Zambia are also relatively painless and, no matter which side of the falls you choose to stay at, visiting both sides of Victoria Falls is, by African standards, a breeze. Just ask your Travel Expert for details before you leave home because regulations shift like the water level of the Zambezi.
