Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 and 2: South Luangwa National Park
Mfuwe Airport is your first African experience. A small and charming airport unlike any you've ever experienced, Mfuwe must be one of the world's smallest – and most relaxed – international airports. Your guide will meet you at the airport for the start of your Zambian adventure.
On the way: The transfer to your Luangwa safari lodge from Mfuwe Airport takes about 40mins through the villages of the Luangwa Game Management Area (GMA) with good chance of seeing wildlife so keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready.
When you're there: Your first safari lodge is Nkwali Camp on the edge of the South Luangwa National Park. With access into the park across the river, the view from your tented suite is of river, bush and wildlife.
Daily activities include a dawn-patrol game drive through the South Luangwa National Park with excellent game viewing, birding and unspoilt wilderness; lunches by the river's edge are followed by afternoon tea and a second game drive that extends into the night returning by way of spotlight-illuminated nocturnal creatures.
Accommodation: Nkwali Camp
Day 3, 4 and 5: South Luangwa National Park
From Nkwali it's a game drive through the park to either Nsefu or Tena Tena, both renowned for their exceptional wildlife game viewing safaris and sublime settings inside the South Luangwa National Park.
On the way: The drive is slow and enjoyable as you meander through Zambia's premier wildlife destination en route to your safari lodge.
When you're there: You'll fall into the routine easily. Morning game drives, followed by a lunch and a siesta topped off with more excellent game viewing in the afternoon/evening. Here you can also opt for the fascinating walking safari to have a completely different experience of the African bush.
Another popular activity is to visit the lodge community project: Kawaza Village, which is a real African village, nothing like the potted culture you get in the air-brushed destinations 'down south'.
Accommodation options: Tena Tena Camp or Nsefu Camp
Day 6, 7 and 8: Victoria Falls (Livingstone)
From the South Luangwa Park it's a five-hour flight via Lusaka to Victoria Falls
On the way: The transfer to Mfuwe Airport is a last-chance game drive and, as luck often has it, you'll probably see the most wildlife on this day. Your lodge in Victoria Falls will provide the transfer from Livingstone International Airport.
When you're there: The Zambezi River flows through a dense ribbon of ebony and mahogany trees on its way to the thundering Victoria Falls a few km away. Your lodge lines the river with wonderful private views of this magical scenery. Explore the river, its islands and wildlife and of course spend a day at Victoria Falls, 15 mins' drive from the lodge.
Activities at Victoria Falls are many and varied. From experiencing the evocative beauty of Victoria Falls at ground-lvel it's time to take to the skies for an even more impressive view. Livingstone Island, just above the precipice of the falls, is probably the world's most sensational lunch venue. Other activities, among a raft of others, include sunset river cruises, canoeing safaris, cultural excursions to the lodge community projects and excellent birding and tiger fishing on the Zambezi.
Accommodation: Tongabezi Lodge or Sandibezi Island Lodge
Day 9: Victoria Falls
Usually you have enough time for one last wonderful Victoria Falls activity before you transfer to Livingstone Airport and your connecting flight home after a wonderful Zambian safari.
