The 14-day self-drive tour of Botswana combines self-catering camping inside the game reserves and National Park with selected nights in comfortable safari lodges - and after your adventurous camping nights, the lodges will be pure luxury.
Parts of the Okavango Delta are inaccessible so we add a fly-in component for a treat and to experience the genuine wilderness of the impenetrable delta. And a nice touch at the end is an optional lodge night or two in Chobe right on the river. The campsite there is well-appointed though so you might prefer to spend your last two nights in Botswana under the great African stars.
A popular option is to add two nights in Victoria Falls, about a 70km transfer from Chobe, and fly out from there. The choices are endless and if you're not up to camping you can go to safari lodges throughout. Whatever your preferences, talk to your Travel Expert for the ultimate in tailormade self-drive Botswana tours.
Self-drive Tour Prices
All our self-drive tours are tailor-made to your exact requirements and budget. For this reason we don't display a price as many things affect your final quote: accommodation, vehicle and camping equipment, domestic and regional transfers, extra activities and more.
Camping in Botswana
Camping in Botswana is not for the feint-hearted. The camping grounds, inside game reserves, are unfenced and facilities are basic. Translated this means amazing adventure but it also means making do with a few less creature comforts than most people are used to. The camping equipment we provide is of the best quality and tested for local conditions; all essential items are included like tents, beds and bedding, chairs and cooking equipment. You will need to buy your food and camping supplies on arrival.
If you have any questions about the nature of the camping aspect of this self-drive tour, please speak directly with your Travel Expert.

for two nights.
This part of your tour is not self-drive because the Okavango Delta is almost impenetrable by road. Spend two nights in the world's largest inland delta enjoying game drives, motor boat safaris and mokoro safaris in the channels and lagoons.
Game viewing is exceptional in this pristine wilderness with an abundance on water-loving animals like elephant, buffalo, crocodiles, hippos, waterbuck, lechwe and reedbuck. Lions, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas and jackals are naturally attracted to the rich pickings of this fertile expanse and the birdlife is phenomenal.
Accommodation: Oddballs or Moremi Crossing Lodge
Day 3: Thamalakane River, Maun
From the Delta, fly back to Maun and collect your camping-ready off-road safari vehicle and head into Maun to buy your food and supplies for your self-drive camping tour of Botswana. From Maun you will then drive about 20 minutes to Thamalakane River Lodge where you can enjoy an afternoon's rest beside the beautiful river.
Thamalakane Lodge is a comfortable lodge away from the hubbub of Maun on the banks of the Thamalakane River. The stone and thatch chalets have en suite bathrooms, private splash pools and a great view of the river with its chirruping birdlife and hippos grunting beneath the lilies.
Accommodation: Thamalakane River Lodge
Day 4 and 5: Nxai Pan, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park
Drive about two hours, most of it on good paved roads, to the

of the Kalahari where vast saline pans, much like Etosha in Namibia, simmer into the horizon and the low-lying bush of acacia trees and tall brown grass stretch as far as you can see.
Wildlife is plentiful here and congregates around the few water sources available making game viewing and birdwatching surprisingly good for such a dry-looking place. And the tranquillity will hit you like a heatwave: just birds chirruping and the gentle breeze wafting through the trees. Not a single sound of human interference let alone any visible evidence.
Spend two days camping in the Kalahari, the cool, clear evenings produce spectacular night skies and the warm clear days make for great game viewing.
Accommodation: Nxai Pans campsite, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park
Day 6, 7, 8 and 9: Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta
Drive back to Maun from Makgadikgadi Pans for a re-supply if necessary then it's into Moremi Game Reserve two hours' drive from Maun. This is about as far in as you can get by standard vehicle in the

so you can be sure you're quite remote in this unspoilt water wilderness - the largest inland delta in the world.
Set up camp and enjoy the raw Botswana bush, alive with the sounds and invigorating scents of untouched Africa. In the Moremi Game Reserve you can go on endless self-drive safaris through the area, stopping at picturesque lagoons for as long as you like just watching nature's parade of animals, birds and plants.
Spend two nights each at two different campsites in the Moremi Game Reserve. Wildlife in this park is abundant and wildly diverse with elephants, lions, leopards, hyena and wild dog adding to the array of plains game including buffalo, kudu, waterbuck, giraffe, zebra, impala and the delightful red lechwe. Birdlife is also spectacular with savannah, woodland and waterbirds in great number and variety.
Accommodation: Third Bridge or Xakanaxa; North Gate Campsite
Day 10 and 11: Savute, Chobe National Park
Leaving the lush paradise behind, you drive north through

towards Savute, where the wildlife gets bigger and predators more ferocious. Savute is famous for its exceptional game viewing experiences and fascinating interactions between feuding species jostling for dominion.
Spend two days on game drives through this parched land, visiting waterholes that attract a good variety of wildlife and birdlife. Evenings by the campfire in Africa are the stuff of everlasting memories, especially with the hoot of an owl or the yip of hyena in the distance.
Accommodation: Savute campsite

to the Chobe River, where the wildlife comes to you.
The drive to Chobe River will take most of the day through the game park. It's one long game drive, stopping for a picnic en route would be a good idea, and if you set off early enough the game viewing will be good.
Once at Chobe River, you'll camp on the river's edge, adjacent to a comfortable safari lodge if you feel your camping cooking repertoire running thin. The lodge offers guided game drives into the park in the morning and late afternoon and guided river safaris on specially adapted river boats. A gentle sundowner cruise is also a must. Or you might fancy your luck again on a self-drive safari through the park which has a good network of well-tended gravel roads.
The great diversity and abundance of wildlife in Chobe is eclipsed by the staggering number of elephants. With Africa's highest concentration and largest population, Chobe is the elephant capital of the continent. In addition to elephants, huge herds of buffalo munch their way across the plains and down the river and a host of antelope, plains game and predators vie for your attention. The birdlife, like the delta, is a cross-section of savannah, woodland and riparian species with never a dull moment the result.
Accommodation: Chobe Safari Lodge campsite (or if you're feeling flush you can book a room at the lodge)
Day 14: End of self-drive safari or Transfer to Victoria Falls
You can either fly out from Kasane Airport, a few minutes' drive from Chobe Safari Lodge or transfer - about 70km - to

We would like to commend the high service received from Namibian Tours and Safaris especially taking into account the short length of time you had to arrange this holiday for us. The recommendations and itinerary were ideal with the majority of our stay in each location being the right duration. The whole process of booking this holiday was hassle free and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to others.
We would specifically like to thank you, Alison, for all of your hard work which resulted in a truly fabulous holiday for us. Also, it was great to meet up with you in Solitaire where you expressed so much love for your country and this was clearly mirrored in the schedule and service you presented to us allowing us to experience this fantastic country. It will not be the case of 'if' we return to Namibia, it is more the case of 'when' we will return as we enjoyed it so much.
A special mention for Edward he did a super job – vouchers and maps were with our car hire agency at the airport – book presentation of whole trip was clear, easy to follow and complete. He even gave us his mobile No in case we encounter some problems. Really to recommend as Tour Operator and will use them again next time.
Road – all went well and thanks to have recommended a 4Wheel Drive Car – due to rough road conditions we appreciated – you could do it with a normal car and met tourists with B type cars but they took much longer for the journeys – had more issues with flat tyres and most admitted next time they will take a 4Wheel Drive Car.
Would like to thank you for all your time spent and hard work to find best places, difficult tasks due to budget restrictions. I will recommend you and your agency whenever I can – actually already did in Joburg – hope brings you some new customers - and of course will come to you for my next trip this time to South Africa hopefully in 2012.
Dear Wilmari,
Back home and I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us. I was especially pleased that for the accommodation with dinner all knew about my allergies and cooked accordingly. The Cheetah experience made my daughter very happy and they were so kind to not even charge me for taking pictures.
Highlight of our trip was the stay in
The Fort

I cannot recommend to anybody (fined for driving on their property and below average dinner buffet) and also the Olivia Guesthouse was a letdown when it came to the food (lunch and breakfast).
I have posted some pictures on Flickr, maybe you want to have a look and I'm always happy to read comments.
Last but not least: Could you please send us the itinerary you prepared for us and we received at arrival electronically? Some of my friends are interested to book the same trip with you.
