Tour Brief

Starting and ending at Red Dunes Lodge, the Trans-Kalahari Walk is a guided hike through the dune valleys and savannah of the Kalahari and into the grassy plains of the Karoo biome. A day pack is sufficient as you overnight at a permanent tented camp in the private nature reserve.

This hike is a scenic, game viewing exploration of the magical Kalahari. Along the way you can expect to see giraffe, Hartmann's mountain zebra, oryx, black and blue wildebeest, eland, kudu, nyala, red hartebeest, blesbok, ostrich, meerkats and many other smaller mammals. Your guide (English or German) will also point out birds, plants, insects and reptiles that turn the Kalahari from an apparent wasteland into a thriving organism.

Nighttime temperatures in winter can drop to freezing and the days are warm to hot with very little precipitation year round. The trail takes you along sturdy valleys and plains but a little effort will be required summiting the soft sand dunes - the views will make it well worth while.

Your overnight stop is at a permanent tented camp with thatch-covered tents on wooden decks with hot running water, flushing toilets and a thatched living area with a dining room, swimming pool and a wonderful campfire. You can sleep under the stars or your tented room.

The Trans-Kalahari Walk is available all year round and there is no minimum group size.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kalahari

Being just two hour's south of Windhoek on the main tarred B1 road, you will easily reach the lodge the same day you arrive in Namibia.

Depending on what time you arrive there is plenty to do at the lodge including marked trails, mountain biking, game drives, scenic sunset drives and game viewing from the main lodge overlooking a waterhole.

Accommodation: Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge

Day 2: Kalahari Hike

An early start gives you the amazing opportunity to watch the sunrise from atop a red dune with fresh coffee. Traverse the dunes and valleys stopping for animals, interesting trees and plants, insects, reptiles and other minutia of the Kalahari.

A lunchtime siesta in the shade of a camelthorn breaks up the day and, after the heat has worn off, you will continue onwards to your luxury overnight camp.

A full buffet dinner awaits and you will spend the evening sitting around the campfire recounting the wonderful day's adventure. Sleep under the stars or in your cosy tent, it's up to you.

Day 3: Kalahari

Another a wonderful outdoor shower, cooked breakfast and glorious sunrise will see you moving from the Kalahari biome to the Karoo biome on your second day's walk. The Karoo habitat is characterised by thicker shrubs and dense savanna attracting small and medium-sized antelope such as the rare nyala, wildebeest and impala.

Walking time today is a gentle three hours returning to Red Dunes Lodge where a pool, a cool drink, a sunset and an a la carte dinner await.

Accommodation: Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge

Day 4: Windhoek or onwards

After breakfast and one last magical sunrise, it's time to head back to Windhoek after your wonderful Kalahari walk. But wait. There's more. Continue southwest to Sossusvlei and the Naukluft Park for more walking, more amazing scenery and all of it completely different to what you've just experienced.

Or, if you're a serious hiker, use the Trans-Kalahari to acclimatise and ease yourself into the monster of all hikes further south: Fish River Canyon Hike. This slack-pack Kalahari interlude will break up the long drive and get you well in the mood for high adventure and the great outdoors.

Or… actually I'll stop there because the options and combinations are almost without limit. Talk to your Travel Expert about combining this walk with other hikes and safaris in Namibia because as we all know the best way to experience a place is to walk it. And Namibia is one of the best places for walking.

“Thanks for all your work putting together a holiday we truly loved”

We would like to commend the high service received from Namibian Tours and Safaris especially taking into account the short length of time you had to arrange this holiday for us. The recommendations and itinerary were ideal with the majority of our stay in each location being the right duration. The whole process of booking this holiday was hassle free and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to others.

We would specifically like to thank you, Alison, for all of your hard work which resulted in a truly fabulous holiday for us. Also, it was great to meet up with you in Solitaire where you expressed so much love for your country and this was clearly mirrored in the schedule and service you presented to us allowing us to experience this fantastic country. It will not be the case of 'if' we return to Namibia, it is more the case of 'when' we will return as we enjoyed it so much.

“Edward did a super job”

A special mention for Edward he did a super job – vouchers and maps were with our car hire agency at the airport – book presentation of whole trip was clear, easy to follow and complete. He even gave us his mobile No in case we encounter some problems. Really to recommend as Tour Operator and will use them again next time.

Road – all went well and thanks to have recommended a 4Wheel Drive Car – due to rough road conditions we appreciated – you could do it with a normal car and met tourists with B type cars but they took much longer for the journeys – had more issues with flat tyres and most admitted next time they will take a 4Wheel Drive Car.

Would like to thank you for all your time spent and hard work to find best places, difficult tasks due to budget restrictions. I will recommend you and your agency whenever I can – actually already did in Joburg – hope brings you some new customers - and of course will come to you for my next trip this time to South Africa hopefully in 2012.

“Thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us”

Dear Wilmari,
Back home and I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us. I was especially pleased that for the accommodation with dinner all knew about my allergies and cooked accordingly. The Cheetah experience made my daughter very happy and they were so kind to not even charge me for taking pictures.

Highlight of our trip was the stay in Onguma The Fort and we are determined to return one day.

As pointed out before, the Namib Desert Lodge I cannot recommend to anybody (fined for driving on their property and below average dinner buffet) and also the Olivia Guesthouse was a letdown when it came to the food (lunch and breakfast).

I have posted some pictures on Flickr, maybe you want to have a look and I'm always happy to read comments.

Last but not least: Could you please send us the itinerary you prepared for us and we received at arrival electronically? Some of my friends are interested to book the same trip with you.
