Tour Brief

Covering more than 200,000 hectares, the NamibRand is a huge self-sustaining eco-venture protecting the pro-Namib biome - the transition zone between the Namib Desert and the uplands of inland Namibia.

The Tok Tokkie Walking Trail takes you through this spectacular and pristine environment on a luxury, fully-portered hike with overnight stops in semi-permanent camps with hot-water bucket showers, three course dinners and the open skies and vast vistas as your stage.

The tour can easily be added to any standard self-drive or guided tour of Namibia. Group sizes on this fully inclusive walk range from 2 to 8 and, while you only carry your water and day pack, walking up to 8 hours in one day requires a good level of fitness. Temperatures can be extreme in the desert with hot days and cold nights.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek or Kalahari

Arrive in Windhoek and collect your hired car (or your guide will meet you at the airport) and transfer to your Windhoek accommodation. Better yet, hit the road south towards the NamibRand Nature Reserve and stop over at Red Dunes Lodge for the wonderful two-day Trans Kalahari Walk.

In Windhoek you can explore the museums, galleries, market and township and make any last-minute purchases at the numerous outdoor adventure shops.

Day 2: NamibRand Nature Reserve

The Tok Tokkie starting point is in the NamibRand Nature Reserve about two hours' south of Sossusvlei; a six-hour drive from Windhoek or a four-hour drive from your Kalahari overnight stop.

Arrive in time for a de-briefing at 2pm or earlier if you've booked lunch. Your luggage is sent ahead by vehicle to the overnight camp and after a quick drink and light snack the trail begins. Traverse the grass-covered sandy plains with their fairy circles and over the gently rolling red dunes.

Dine under the stars, sleep on stretcher beds in the open and enjoy the basic comforts of a makeshift bathroom with bush toilet, hot-water bucket shower and hand basin.

Walking time: 2 hours

Day 3: NamibRand Nature Reserve

Arise before sunrise with a steaming mug of coffee and watch the dawn break over surely one of the most beautiful scenes you can imagine. A good breakfast will fortify you for the full day's walk ahead.

Today you will experience more of the beautiful NamibRand scenery as your guide brings the seemingly lifeless desert into full bloom. Though elusive, oryx, springbok, foxes, ostriches and other small mammals are easy to spot across the plains; your guide will look out for dune larks, lappet-faced vultures and other Namibian specials and all the while you will discover such fascinating creatures as the flightless wasp, the barking gecko, the dancing white lady and of course the delightful tok tokkie after which the trail is named.

Stop for lunch and a snooze at a suitably scenic and shady spot while the heat dissipates then set off for the afternoon home stretch.

Arrive at camp in time for a scenic sunset and an ice cold drink on a comfy camp chair; refresh yourself with a hot shower while dinner is prepared for you for another wonderful night under the desert sky.

Walking time: 8 hours

Day 4: Tok Tokkie Farmhouse

Keeping things civilised, despite your pre-dawn start, your third day on the trail is a gentle 3-hour stroll over grassy plains dotted with acacias and wildlife. All the while dramatic mountains and inselbergs rise out of the horizon making your photographs something special.

Arrive full circle at the Tok Tokkie Farmhouse in time for lunch and either spend the night or hit the road to Sossusvlei for even more amazing experiences of the world's oldest desert.

Walking time: 3 hours

The options for combining the Tok Tokkie Walking Trail with a general tour of the region are almost without limit so talk to your Travel Expert to get the best out of Namibia, one of Earth's truly rare gems.

“Thanks for all your work putting together a holiday we truly loved”

We would like to commend the high service received from Namibian Tours and Safaris especially taking into account the short length of time you had to arrange this holiday for us. The recommendations and itinerary were ideal with the majority of our stay in each location being the right duration. The whole process of booking this holiday was hassle free and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to others.

We would specifically like to thank you, Alison, for all of your hard work which resulted in a truly fabulous holiday for us. Also, it was great to meet up with you in Solitaire where you expressed so much love for your country and this was clearly mirrored in the schedule and service you presented to us allowing us to experience this fantastic country. It will not be the case of 'if' we return to Namibia, it is more the case of 'when' we will return as we enjoyed it so much.

“Edward did a super job”

A special mention for Edward he did a super job – vouchers and maps were with our car hire agency at the airport – book presentation of whole trip was clear, easy to follow and complete. He even gave us his mobile No in case we encounter some problems. Really to recommend as Tour Operator and will use them again next time.

Road – all went well and thanks to have recommended a 4Wheel Drive Car – due to rough road conditions we appreciated – you could do it with a normal car and met tourists with B type cars but they took much longer for the journeys – had more issues with flat tyres and most admitted next time they will take a 4Wheel Drive Car.

Would like to thank you for all your time spent and hard work to find best places, difficult tasks due to budget restrictions. I will recommend you and your agency whenever I can – actually already did in Joburg – hope brings you some new customers - and of course will come to you for my next trip this time to South Africa hopefully in 2012.

“Thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us”

Dear Wilmari,
Back home and I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us. I was especially pleased that for the accommodation with dinner all knew about my allergies and cooked accordingly. The Cheetah experience made my daughter very happy and they were so kind to not even charge me for taking pictures.

Highlight of our trip was the stay in Onguma The Fort and we are determined to return one day.

As pointed out before, the Namib Desert Lodge I cannot recommend to anybody (fined for driving on their property and below average dinner buffet) and also the Olivia Guesthouse was a letdown when it came to the food (lunch and breakfast).

I have posted some pictures on Flickr, maybe you want to have a look and I'm always happy to read comments.

Last but not least: Could you please send us the itinerary you prepared for us and we received at arrival electronically? Some of my friends are interested to book the same trip with you.
