Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kalahari

The drive from Windhoek to the Kalahari on the first day is quite long with about six and a half hours' driving time. The road is all paved so it is a comfortable ride with plenty of time to stretch your legs on the way.

On the way: Stop in Rehoboth, traditional home of the Baster people; the Kalahari begins to make its infinite presence felt after Mariental.

When you're there: A late afternoon hike to the Quivertree Forest. The Quivertree is a strange-looking type of aloe and one of the world's rarest plants. In the morning, visit the Giants' Playground, where massive dolerite outcrops have eroded into fascinating shapes balanced on top of each other.

Accommodation: Quivertree Forest Campsite

Day 2: Orange River, Fish River Canyon

Many hours of Kalahari to fill as you head to the Orange River by way of the Fish River Canyon.

On the way: After a short stop in Keetmanshoop, take the gravel road to the Fish River Canyon main viewpoint, arriving mid-afternoon.

When you're there: Swim in the croc-free river, enjoy the malaria-free evening and relax at the water's edge.

Accommodation: Orange River Lodge Campsite

Day 3 and 4: Namib Desert, Luderitz

In this vast land, 200km or a three-hour drive is short. Drive north to Luderitz via Aus, which is a private reserve on the tip of the Namib-Naukluft Park and a beautiful corner of the Namib Desert.

On the way: Stop in Rosh Pinah for a comfort stop and traverse the Huib-Hoch Plateau.

When you're there: Hike into the mountains for a sundowner drink; look for the wild horses and discover the living desert; full day trip to Lüderitz, which includes an ocean cruise to The Sedina, Halifax Island to visit the African Penguin colony, Kolmanskop ghost town, Diaz Point, and a tour of the German architecture in the town.

Accommodation: Klein-Aus Vista Klein-Aus Vista
Klein-Aus Vista offers a range of accommodation options and is situated on the southern edge of the Namib-Naukluftn Park. The lodge is near Aus and about 120km from Luderitz making it an excellent base for exploring the southern reaches of the Namib.

Day 5 and 6: Sossusvlei

Drive for five hours on gravel roads northwards through the Namib Desert to Sossusvlei.

On the way: The scenery is harsh, dramatic and old. Ancient geological formations and vast plains mark you way with foreboding dominance.

When you're there: Arrive in the afternoon in time for a sundowner on Elim Dune on the edge of the great sand sea; early morning trip to Sossusvlei; hike up the dunes and explore the pans; hike to Sesriem Canyon in the cool of the afternoon.

Accommodation: Sesriem Campsite Sesriem Campsite
Like all of the properties owned and run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts, Sesriem is a basic, no-frills campsite with some serious benefits. Here you can enter Sossusvlei an hour earlier than anyone else, giving you free rein of the best light.

Day 7: Windhoek

By now, you'll be used to long distances with nothing but beautiful, wild and desolate scenery punctuated by tiny rural towns. Head home to Windhoek on more small back roads. The journey should take between five and six hours to arrive at about 4pm.

On the way: A scenic drive with spectacular passes through the Namib-Naukluft Mountains and the Khomas Hochland Mountains.

When you're there: Your guide will take you straight to your hotel

"Thanks for all your work putting together a holiday we truly loved"

We would like to commend the high service received from Namibian Tours and Safaris especially taking into account the short length of time you had to arrange this holiday for us. The recommendations and itinerary were ideal with the majority of our stay in each location being the right duration. The whole process of booking this holiday was hassle free and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to others.

We would specifically like to thank you, Alison, for all of your hard work which resulted in a truly fabulous holiday for us. Also, it was great to meet up with you in Solitaire where you expressed so much love for your country and this was clearly mirrored in the schedule and service you presented to us allowing us to experience this fantastic country. It will not be the case of 'if' we return to Namibia, it is more the case of 'when' we will return as we enjoyed it so much.

"Edward did a super job"

A special mention for Edward he did a super job – vouchers and maps were with our car hire agency at the airport – book presentation of whole trip was clear, easy to follow and complete. He even gave us his mobile No in case we encounter some problems. Really to recommend as Tour Operator and will use them again next time.

Road – all went well and thanks to have recommended a 4Wheel Drive Car – due to rough road conditions we appreciated – you could do it with a normal car and met tourists with B type cars but they took much longer for the journeys – had more issues with flat tyres and most admitted next time they will take a 4Wheel Drive Car.

Would like to thank you for all your time spent and hard work to find best places, difficult tasks due to budget restrictions. I will recommend you and your agency whenever I can – actually already did in Joburg – hope brings you some new customers - and of course will come to you for my next trip this time to South Africa hopefully in 2012.

"Thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us"

Dear Wilmari,
Back home and I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us. I was especially pleased that for the accommodation with dinner all knew about my allergies and cooked accordingly. The Cheetah experience made my daughter very happy and they were so kind to not even charge me for taking pictures.

Highlight of our trip was the stay in The Fort The Fort
With a range of desert-adapted architectural styles, The Fort in Onguma Game Reserve is an award-winning safari lodge near Etosha National Park.

and we are determined to return one day.

As pointed out before, the Namib Desert Lodge Namib Desert Lodge
The Namib Desert Lodge, inside a private concession, is on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft Park with great desert views and comfortable rooms.

I cannot recommend to anybody (fined for driving on their property and below average dinner buffet) and also the Olivia Guesthouse was a letdown when it came to the food (lunch and breakfast).

I have posted some pictures on Flickr, maybe you want to have a look and I'm always happy to read comments.

Last but not least: Could you please send us the itinerary you prepared for us and we received at arrival electronically? Some of my friends are interested to book the same trip with you.
