for the five-hour drive to the Namib-Naukluft Lodge, a private reserve near Solitaire in the Namib-Naukluft Park.

On the way: Spectacular mountain passes from Windhoek to the Namib Desert; Kuiseb Canyon and the Naukluft Mountains from Swakopmund; look out for Hartmann's mountain zebra, springbok, gemsbok and wild ostrich along the road.

When you're there: Arrive in the evening for a relaxing sundowner drink and dinner under a starry desert sky.

Namib-Naukluft Lodge offers a full day Sossusvlei guided excursion that starts very early in the morning. Drive to Sossusvlei and hike up the dunes for a spectacular sunrise view of the Great Sand Sea; explore the pans and dunes; breakfast at Sossusvlei; visit Sesriem Canyon on your way back to the lodge. In the evening you can opt for a scenic sundowner drive to the marble mountains that overlook the ancient desert.
