Tour Brief

From Victoria Falls, the world's most impressive waterfalls to Hwange National Park, one of Africa's greatest game reserves to the impossibly beautiful Matopos National Park, this is very nearly the best of Zimbabwe in an effortless safari tour.

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the World (*quick quiz, what are the seven natural wonders of the world? See below for answers). A mile wide and 100 metres down, the Zambezi River pours over a sheer cliff's edge into a narrow gourge that roars with power and sends plumes of spray high into the sky.

Hwange National Park is the size of Wales. Wildlife converges around waterholes and the scenery, game viewing and the wilderness experience make Hwange one of Africa's great game reserves.

The Matobo National Park , like Victoria Falls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sheltering the hills, the Matobo National Park is known as much for its incredible density of San rock art and spiritual significance as it is for its impossible beauty, complete tranquillity and the amazing diversity of birds, plants and rare African wildlife.

In 10 days you will visit two World Heritage Sites and experience a first-rate African safari without lifting a finger or worrying about a thing: the whole trip includes door-to-door transfers from start to finish in a safe, comfortable air conditioned Toyota Quantum. And what's more, there are no weight limits like you get on fly-in safaris, which usually limit you to 10kg of soft baggage. The Quantum has a large trailer so your seven safari outfits can jolly well come too.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1 - 3: Victoria Falls

The easiest route is to arrive in Johannesburg and connect to Victoria Falls . We will collect you at the airport and transfer you straight to your hotel.

When you're there: Arrive and check in and, depending on your arrival time, you'll either have lunch and doze or head to the Zambezi River for a sunset cruise on the tranquil waters above the falls. Explore the Victoria Falls from all angles: opposite, behind, above and below. Activities in addition to visiting the falls themselves are many and varied. Game drives, walking with lions, scenic flights over the falls, elephant safaris, canoeing safaris, white water rafting and the insanely inventive gorge swinging and bungee jumping for the adrenaline-deficient among us.

Accommodation: Ilala Lodge , Victoria Falls Safari Lodge , Stanley and Livingstone

  • Day 3 - 7: Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park is an easy 100km drive from Victoria Falls. After breakfast and one last Vic Falls activity, transfer to Ivory Lodge in a private concession bordering the park.

When you're there: With just 12 guests, Ivory Lodge is an intimate and exclusive safari experience. Facing a floodlit waterhole, you are on permanent safari with regular visits from big herds of elephant and buffalo as well the rest of Africa's big game including lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, hyena, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu and hundred of birds.

Spend four full days on a luxury safari. Activities include morning and evening game drives, night drives, walking safaris, stargazing and night game viewing at the lodge.

Accommodation: Ivory Lodge , Hwange National Park

  • Day 7 - 10: Matobo National Park

The four-hour drive from Hwange National Park to Matobo National Park  goes through Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second largest city.

On the way: the road is uneventful, lined with thick mopane woodland and reminiscent of countless stock video shots of Africa whizzing. Several African art and craft markets line the road and you can pick up some excellent Zimbabwean pieces for a song (or a shirt).

When you're there: Camp Amalinda is a special place in a special place. Built into the rocks of one of the iconic kopjies that make Matopos National Park one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Guided rhino tracking safaris are a must with an almost guaranteed sighting in the winter months which, as it happens, is the most scenic time of year to be enjoying this marvellous place. Visit the San rock art sites of which they are still discovering more and more to this day; discover the African bushlore on fascinating interpretive bush walks and scenic hill climbs.

Wildlife is not a focus here, though there is a wide variety of species including many rare and elusive animals like leopard, sable and roan. Birdlife, on the other hand, is astonishing with over 40 species of raptor alone on record among many other birds attracted to the great variety of plants and habitats in the park.

The focus at Matopos Hills National Park is about the timeless beauty. Inhabited for hundreds of thousands of years, the Matobo Hills remain a sacred and spiritual place to this day and you cannot help but be moved by sea of granite outcrops and tranquillity that envelopes them.

    Accommodation: Camp Amalinda

  • Day 10: Depart from Bulawayo International Airport

Breakfast and one last mental snapshot of the beautiful Matobo Hills will see you back the 30km to Bulawayo International where you will fly to Jo'burg and connect with your homeward flight, Zimbabwe a memory of beauty and wonderful experiences.

“Thanks for all your work putting together a holiday we truly loved”

We would like to commend the high service received from Namibian Tours and Safaris especially taking into account the short length of time you had to arrange this holiday for us. The recommendations and itinerary were ideal with the majority of our stay in each location being the right duration. The whole process of booking this holiday was hassle free and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to others.

We would specifically like to thank you, Alison, for all of your hard work which resulted in a truly fabulous holiday for us. Also, it was great to meet up with you in Solitaire where you expressed so much love for your country and this was clearly mirrored in the schedule and service you presented to us allowing us to experience this fantastic country. It will not be the case of 'if' we return to Namibia, it is more the case of 'when' we will return as we enjoyed it so much.

“Edward did a super job”

A special mention for Edward he did a super job – vouchers and maps were with our car hire agency at the airport – book presentation of whole trip was clear, easy to follow and complete. He even gave us his mobile No in case we encounter some problems. Really to recommend as Tour Operator and will use them again next time.

Road – all went well and thanks to have recommended a 4Wheel Drive Car – due to rough road conditions we appreciated – you could do it with a normal car and met tourists with B type cars but they took much longer for the journeys – had more issues with flat tyres and most admitted next time they will take a 4Wheel Drive Car.

Would like to thank you for all your time spent and hard work to find best places, difficult tasks due to budget restrictions. I will recommend you and your agency whenever I can – actually already did in Joburg – hope brings you some new customers - and of course will come to you for my next trip this time to South Africa hopefully in 2012.

“Thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us”

Dear Wilmari,
Back home and I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us. I was especially pleased that for the accommodation with dinner all knew about my allergies and cooked accordingly. The Cheetah experience made my daughter very happy and they were so kind to not even charge me for taking pictures.

Highlight of our trip was the stay in Onguma The Fort and we are determined to return one day.

As pointed out before, the Namib Desert Lodge I cannot recommend to anybody (fined for driving on their property and below average dinner buffet) and also the Olivia Guesthouse was a letdown when it came to the food (lunch and breakfast).

I have posted some pictures on Flickr, maybe you want to have a look and I'm always happy to read comments.

Last but not least: Could you please send us the itinerary you prepared for us and we received at arrival electronically? Some of my friends are interested to book the same trip with you.
