Tour Brief

is a wildlife safari experience in one of southern Africa's best game viewing destinations.

Add to the excitement and adventure of a self-drive safari by camping as you go along. Botswana has campsites in prime game viewing safari locations and, though basic, the facilities are clean and safe. This itinerary is mostly camping with safari lodges at the beginning and end. Of course you can tailor-make this itinerary with all lodges/hotels or a combination of camping and safari lodges/hotels: the choices are almost endless.

The 10-day Botswana Wildlife Self-drive Safari starts in Maun and ends in Kasane. But this is nothing if not an independent self-drive tour so you can just as easily start in Kasane and end in Maun. Another popular option is to include Victoria Falls Victoria Falls

at the end of your Botswana self-drive with a 70km transfer from Kasane.

From Victoria Falls you can fly to Jo'burg and be homeward bound in a jiffy; there are also regular flights between Jo'burg and Maun and between Jo'burg and Kasane.

After a night in Maun you drive your fully-kitted camping off-road vehicle about two hours into the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta Okavango Delta

. Depending on the wildlife, birdlife and photo-ops you see along the way, it could be longer. But on day 1 of your safari who's complaining?

Spend four days in the delta on game drives and guided mokoro safaris in the endless channels and lagoons of the world's largest inland delta. The game viewing, birdlife and scenery will have you at a loss for words other than paradise.

From the gentle waters of Moremi and the Okavango Delta you will drive to the Savute area in the southern part of Chobe National Park Chobe National Park

- an altogether different wildlife experience. Savute is big game and big predator country famed for its lions, hyenas and elephants. The general game viewing is excellent and the landscape is your classic Botswana savannah plains.

From Savute, you continue within the Chobe National Park to the Chobe River in the far north-east of the park. If you missed the elephants in Savute, they're all but guaranteed here. Officially the largest concentration of African elephants anywhere on the continent you can consider it a major achievement if you don't see any up close.

At the Chobe River you can opt for a river safari in a motorboat and, aside from being spectacularly scenic, this is one of the best ways to observe big game without bothering them and without being bothered by them. The birdlife is also outstanding so there's plenty to see and do on the river. The roads are easy to navigate so you can take a drive round the park on your own at your leisure and stop for as long as you like and take as many pictures of impala as you like.

From Chobe you can either fly out to Jo'burg or transfer to Victoria Falls - about an hour's drive - and extend your magnificent Botswana self-drive safari with a few days at one of the seven wonders of the world. And then fly out.

Thamalakane Lodge is a comfortable lodge away from the hubbub of Maun on the banks of the Thamalakane River. The stone and thatch chalets have en suite bathrooms, private splash pools and a great view of the river with its chirruping birdlife and hippos grunting beneath the lilies.

Depending on your arrival time you can either stock up on camping supplies the day you arrive or the day after. Either way, Maun has all you need in the way of food and camping supplies for the 10-day adventure you're about to embark upon.

along well-maintained gravel roads, stopping for pictures of wildlife and beautiful African scenery as you continue deeper into the waterways of the delta.

On the way: As you approach it, the Okavango Delta opens up slowly to reveal its vast, watery wilderness. The land changes from open acacia savannah to lush islands with broad-leafed and riparian woodlands, towering palms and thickets of impenetrable bush.

When you're there: Wildlife in the Moremi Game Reserve is prolific including lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and plenty of antelope including the rare red lechwe. Birding is superb with hundreds of species on record, plenty of specials and some renowned birding spots.

Accommodation: Set up camp and enjoy the serenity of the delta's pristine wilderness.

to Chobe Safari Lodge on the Chobe River.

On the way: It's all game drive from here and you should be on the lookout for elephant, buffalo, a variety antelope and many species of bird.

When you're there: The Chobe River attracts Africa's greatest concentration of elephant. Knee-deep in the gentle river's flooded plains, elephants nibble in numbers on the juicy jackalberry and mangosteen trees that tower above the ground with huge dense canopies.

The schedule of activities at Chobe Safari Lodge is flexible and varied with optional motor boat safaris, canoeing safaris, guided walks, fishing, sunset river cruises and game drives into Chobe National Park on offer at a time and frequency that suits you. Or you can take your own vehicle into the park and follow the well-graded gravel roads in your time.

In addition to huge elephant herds, the Chobe area has good numbers of plains game including buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, large and small antelope and plenty of predators including lion, leopard, wild dog and hyena. Thanks to the river, birdlife is prolific with over 400 species on record including Pel's fishing owl and African Fish Eagle.

When you're there: Victoria Falls is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Both sides offer excellent hotels and safari lodges and a great view of the falls. Despite that country's economic and political problems, Victoria Falls remains a safe and accessible destination and an essential addition to any African safari.

Your Travel Expert will provide up-to-date advice about visiting Victoria Falls before you travel and if the security level is threatened we will not hesitate to intervene and re-arrange your travel plans as necessary.

"Thanks for all your work putting together a holiday we truly loved"

We would like to commend the high service received from Namibian Tours and Safaris especially taking into account the short length of time you had to arrange this holiday for us. The recommendations and itinerary were ideal with the majority of our stay in each location being the right duration. The whole process of booking this holiday was hassle free and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to others.

We would specifically like to thank you, Alison, for all of your hard work which resulted in a truly fabulous holiday for us. Also, it was great to meet up with you in Solitaire where you expressed so much love for your country and this was clearly mirrored in the schedule and service you presented to us allowing us to experience this fantastic country. It will not be the case of 'if' we return to Namibia, it is more the case of 'when' we will return as we enjoyed it so much.

"Edward did a super job"

A special mention for Edward he did a super job – vouchers and maps were with our car hire agency at the airport – book presentation of whole trip was clear, easy to follow and complete. He even gave us his mobile No in case we encounter some problems. Really to recommend as Tour Operator and will use them again next time.

Road – all went well and thanks to have recommended a 4Wheel Drive Car – due to rough road conditions we appreciated – you could do it with a normal car and met tourists with B type cars but they took much longer for the journeys – had more issues with flat tyres and most admitted next time they will take a 4Wheel Drive Car.

Would like to thank you for all your time spent and hard work to find best places, difficult tasks due to budget restrictions. I will recommend you and your agency whenever I can – actually already did in Joburg – hope brings you some new customers - and of course will come to you for my next trip this time to South Africa hopefully in 2012.

"Thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us"

Dear Wilmari,
Back home and I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for planning a perfect vacation for us. I was especially pleased that for the accommodation with dinner all knew about my allergies and cooked accordingly. The Cheetah experience made my daughter very happy and they were so kind to not even charge me for taking pictures.

Highlight of our trip was the stay in The Fort The Fort
With a range of desert-adapted architectural styles, The Fort in Onguma Game Reserve is an award-winning safari lodge near Etosha National Park.

and we are determined to return one day.

I cannot recommend to anybody (fined for driving on their property and below average dinner buffet) and also the Olivia Guesthouse was a letdown when it came to the food (lunch and breakfast).

I have posted some pictures on Flickr, maybe you want to have a look and I'm always happy to read comments.

Last but not least: Could you please send us the itinerary you prepared for us and we received at arrival electronically? Some of my friends are interested to book the same trip with you.
