Schulphoek Guest House
If you want to sound like a seasoned South African traveller, a well-heeled whale-watcher and a Hermanus veteran, you'll pronounce Schulphoek like this: skilp-HOOK. And if you stay at this charming guesthouse once, you'll probably come back several times to practice.
Situated about 50m from the sea and a short drive out of the mêlée of Hermanus on the Garden Route, Schulphoek is a small, intimate and welcoming guesthouse offering true South African hospitality.
Mannes, Petro and Chef Rebecca welcome you into their family-run guesthouse with open arms, a complimentary first-night meal at the restaurant and a guided tour of Mannes's sensational wine cellar. The sea-facing lounge and restaurant are on permanent lookout for whales that come within splashing distance of the seashore every year from July to November.
All six of the standard rooms face the garden and the main luxury suite offers a beautiful uninterrupted sea view (at a price though, so consider booking into a standard suite and enjoying the view and the whale watching from the convivial communal lounge).Décor is suitably beach cottage with bright furniture, large windows and terracotta tiles. The indigenous garden and fynbos-covered dunes all around do their best to compete with the crashing waves of the ocean at your doorstep.
