Waterberg Wilderness Lodge

Comprising two separate lodges, one in the valley and one built into the Waterberg Massif itself, Waterberg Wilderness Lodge in central Namibia is a destination and stopover rolled into one.

Our rating: 3/5 Stars
Location: Waterberg, Wild Namibia

Accommodation Description

Waterberg Wilderness Lodge lines a valley fed by copious underground water and the result is giant acacias, bamboo groves and a lush garden. The chalets, built from the red sandstone that dominates the Waterberg region, are spread along the valley floor beneath the trees. All are en suite with showers and toilets and power is delivered by sunshine - another resource in plentiful supply here in Namibia. The main lodge houses the dining room, two swimming pools, cosy lounge and library.

Upping the romance and comfort ante, Waterberg Plateua Lodge as the name implies is built higher up on the plateau with expansive views of the endless Namibian horizon with nothing but African bush stretching in all directions as far as your binoculars will see.

Built in a similar style with sandstone walls, the chalets have cool tiled floors and the traditional iron roofs from times gone by. More intimate, a rocky plunge pool on your secluded verandah makes for a rather memorable way to cool off and the cosy dining room in the main lodge is the social centre of the lodge.

Dinner at both lodges is a typically Namibian display of game meats and homegrown veggies complimented in every instance by your choice of robust South African reds. Afternoon tea is a wonderful tradition at both Waterberg lodges setting the scene for a magical sunset and lively dinner conversation.

The lodge also has a well-run campsite in a separate valley with a swimming pool, kiosk and private shady camping sites.

Activities

The wildlife in the Waterberg, though elusive in this densely wooded and hilly region, includes some of Namibia’s more rare animals including rhino, roan and sable antelope, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, oryx, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest and many more. Birding is also excellent thanks to the permanent water and vegetation. Activities include guided plateau hikes (approx. 3 hours), scenic drives into the game reserve; walking safaris; marked hiking trails of varying distance; and guided cultural tours into Hereroland where you can visit the school, marketplace and community centre and sample some traditional street fare.
