Accommodation Description

Looking at a map, the roads from Grootfontein, east of Etosha, to the Caprivi strip and Bushmanland are daunting straight lines. Roy's Camp is a happy break in the monotony and a handy stopover between north and south, and east and west.

Basic at best, accommodation is in rustic stone bungalows with en suite bathrooms and private barbecue facilities; several camping sites use the shade of the mopane and acacia trees that typify this sub-tropical region.

The swimming pool is the focal point of the quirky living area. Surrounded by Morris chairs with a local twist and presided over by a gnarled bar, the pool is an essential component of the instant relax-and-unwind formula. Leading off from the pool area is a dark and no less quirky restaurant that serves up some meaty home-grown meals.

The camp has two short walks with numbered trees and plenty of birds to identify; wildlife is limited to small antelopes and nocturnal omnivores; although eland are not uncommon. Organised visits to a Bushman village, 80km east, should be booked in advance and are well worth the time.
