Mopane Camp: Kaokoland

Mopane Camp

Price: From US$74 (Our pricing)
Location: Kaokoland, Wild Namibia

Accommodation Description

In the dry and desolate Kaokoland, a hot shower and an iced drink are all you need to feel like you're in the lap of luxury. Mopane Camp is a rustic community-owned lodge on the banks of an ephemeral river that provides that and a few more delights.

About 5km outside of Opuwo - the last outpost before you reach the Kunene region proper - Mopane Camp has 15 tented rooms most of which have received their upgrade to en suite. Those that haven't make use of the communal ablutions which have five showers and five toilets. Beds have fresh linen and each room has a deck with chairs that make for a rather splendid sundowner spot.

Life revolves around the boma, which is a large reed enclosure shaded by the mopane trees and frequently visited by small creatures and plenty of birds. The camp is on the edge of a steep bank on the Hoarusib River and overlooks the parched mopane woodlands typical of the Koakoland region.

The bar is well-stocked and dinners are often cooked on the campfire. The camp's older brother, Ohakane Lodge, lives in Opuwo and has a coffee shop that serves breakfasts and light lunches.
