The world's tallest dunes in the world's oldest desert: Sossusvlei is a remarkable place to visit in Namibia's Namib-Naukluft Park. But you have to do it right to make the most of the light and to beat the crowds.

(1/20) How to make the most of your Sossusvlei holiday... (2/20) Most important, you must rise early to catch the beautiful clear pre-dawn light and to beat the crowds. (3/20) The drive into Sossusvlei takes about 45 minutes and your first stop should be at Deadvlei, so named for the petrified acacias that grew here in wetter times over 300 years ago. The trees, the shimmering white salt pan, the rust-red dunes and clear blue sky are a magnificent sight. (4/20) Explore the pan and its eerie trees... (5/20) ...textures... (6/20) ...shapes... (7/20) ...and colours formed by the dunes. (8/20) Then move onto Sossusvlei, which is another pan surrounded by dunes, where the Tsauchab River gave up its attempt to reach the sea 80km away. (9/20) The climb up Sossusvlei dune will seem like madness at first. (10/20) But you must soldier on; it takes perhaps 20 to 30 minutes to reach the top... (11/20) ...where the view makes it all worthwhile as does a light snack and a drink of water. (12/20) On your way out, stop at Dune 45 for some picturesque scenes, and, if you feel fit, another walk for another sensational view. (13/20) You will often see ostrich, gemsbok and springbok: hardy creatures that thrive in the desert and add interest to your scenic landscape pictures. (14/20) One of the many faces of Dune 45. (15/20) And another picturesque view of Dune 45. This is why you must take lots of memory cards with you. (16/20) Return to your campsite in the beautiful Namib-Naukluft Park... (17/20) ...or to your lodge. Either way you'll welcome a refreshing swim... (18/20) ...and a cup of tea. (19/20) If you're especially energitic you can climb Elim Dune at sunset or enjoy the spectacle from the comfort of your lodge. In both cases, the sunset will be... (20/20) ...sensational. You will probably want to do it all over again tomorrow.
