Delta Camp

Veering towards the rustic end of the luxury safari continuum, Delta Camp is a small, remote and characterful safari lodge in a permanent channel in Botswana's Okavango Delta.

Our rating: 4/5 Stars
Location: Okavango Delta, Botswana

Accommodation Description

Retaining unique charm, each of the seven enormous chalets is individually designed and decorated by a local artist. Built under, around and into the trees, the chalets are thatch and reed constructions on elevated wooden decks. Nature passes through these ephemeral shelters like water through a sieve.

Delta Camp is almost entirely solar-powered including the hot water in your en suite bathroom which has a flushing toilet and wonderful open-air - but totally private - shower.

The living area of the camp, like the chalets, opens out to the water channels and marshland of the Okavango Delta. Comfy couches and Morris chairs, hand-woven rugs, a large verandah and an airy dining area combine to set the mood of tranquil reflection.

Although the safari activities at Delta Camp are dictated by the water levels, most of the time you will have the option of both water safaris in a traditional dug-out (mokoro) and walking safaris on the islands. For the duration of your stay your personal guide - a man born and bred in the Delta - will show you his back yard; you can even visit his family in the nearby village and you will come away with a deep connection with your surroundings. The whole experience at Delta Camp is rather more profound and intimate than your average high-end safari.

The Okavango Delta is famous not only for its Eden-like wilderness but also for its abundant wildlife, even here deep in the watery channels of the world's largest inland delta. Elephants love it here as do hippos and a variety of plains game including lion, buffalo, leopard, giraffe, zebra and rare water-loving antelope like lechwe, tsessebe, sitatunga and waterbuck. Birdlife, with all this water, is not surprisingly prolific and many smaller creatures thrive in this more gentle environment including cervals, genets, civets, badgers, otters, pangolin as do reptiles large and small from the crocodile to the gecko.
